Default 5.9 info and gas mileage

Hi all,

New to this forum. Picture coming soon.

I recently purchased a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD Quad with a 5.9L. It has 153,000 miles on it.
Since purchased, I have been through the engine fairly thoroughly and ended up replacing the water pump, timing chain and gears, thermostat, etc. I also flushed the cooling system and replaced all hoses. As a result, the anti-freeze smell that plagued the cab has disappeared.

I switched to a high mileage oil, replaced both speed sensors, and replaced the pass. side rear door lower latch. I'm currently working on a few front steering/suspension items including a steering gearbox stabilizer that helped the drift tremendously, but for the most part the truck runs and drives very well. I've put about 2500 miles on so far and am very pleased. This winter in Ohio has been difficult so far so driving conditions have not been ideal.

I have been trying to track the gas mileage and have found that I consistently get 13mpg city/highway. I'm considering a new air induction system and would like any other suggestions I can get to maybe improve the mileage. 15-17 overall may be a stretch, but you can't blame me for trying. Currently, there are no known codes, and the CEL has not reared it's ugly head. Any advice?

Thanks!!!

13mpg is about normal.. When you were doing your other parts did you fix the plenum?? Dont bother with a CAI.. Just get a drop in filter.. The stock intake is good enough.. You are running a winter blend gas right now so mileage always suffers.. My guess is with regular non winter blend and careful driving along with a good tuneup you can probably manage 15 if your lucky.. Dont expect much more though..

My 96 1500 gets around 13 MPG for town/highway, actually most of that in town. Did tuneup, plenum is clean etc. Seems normal enough to me, better than my 75 blazer's MPG.

I had a 79 Blazer... full-time 4wd. It got 10 MPG..... so, figgered a part time conversion would help. Yep, shore did. I got 11..... didn't matter what I was doing, just me, fully loaded, towing, fully loaded and towing... 11 MPG... well, at least it was consistent.....

Ok, back on topic here..... You have done most of the stuff you need to, next would be O2 sensor, (NTK, or Denso, don't bother with bosch...) Making sure your plenum was good is a requirement on these trucks.... Tire pressures.... alignment.... all the usual suspects.

Thanks for the feedback.
Ive thought about the O2 sensor as well. I intend to do the magnet test on the intake this weekend but I haven't had any of the symptoms that I've read about.
Is there any other air filter option (drop in) than a K&N? Pricey!
Guess if I'm trying to save gas though.......
