There is an updated service bulletin from chrysler specifying ATF +4. Not exactly something that put on TV...... service departments know about it, but, the general public is usually the last to know.

Before ATF+4 they recommended ATF+3. Dexron is mostly GM (so I wouldn't trust that dipstick for anything) and Mercon for Ford.

Compare your dipstick with one from another Ram. And drain and change to correct fluid.

I had to go and look at my dipstick off the 96 yesterday after reading this thread, It says to "Use Mopar ATF Plus Type 7176 Auto Trans Fluid or Dexron II" (not Dextron) FYI.
