im at a huge loss, and dont know what to do... the trailer harness is unmolested, and is in great shape. so its not that.

edit... also, i can take either reverse light out, doesnt matter which side, and they no longer are on with the brakes. however if both reverse bulbs are in, and you take the drivers side brake/turn bulb out, the reverse lights go out as well, but only when the trailer harness is connected.
That right there tells me the problem is in the trailer harness. Is it possible to simply plug it in wrong?? If the harness worked fine on another truck.... but, doesn't want to work on yours, compare pinouts of the connectors for both years of trucks, (which should be the same, if the trailer harness is the same.) and maybe verify that the wires haven't been shuffled on your harness.

That is about the only thing I can possibly think of that would cause what you are seeing. If you weren't 400+ miles away... I would be real tempted to come over and have a look. Just out of morbid curiosity.

I thought it was too.. but I fixed all the grounds I could find. So now the multifunction switch, nss, and the ctm are up for testing.

Anyone got a ctm they could spare?

I really don't think the CTM is the problem.

I have another thought, I'll call you right now.

so this issue is finally BUSTED!!!

it turned out to be the trailer harness after all. the ground wires were corroded internally on part of the trailer harness(literally a 4" peice of wire) that caused the whole issue.

so, now its all fixed, and i need to invest in a multimeter! had to borrow my neighbors meter to figure it out.

plus side to all this?? all my grounds are brand new!
