Default grinding when shifting from 4L to 2h

I have an 01 ram sport with the 5.2 4x4. My issue is that I can shift out of 2h to N to 4L with no issue but when I try to go back into 2h I get a grinding noise and it won't go into 2h unless I shut the truck off. If anyone could give me some help or point me to the right thread it would be a huge help. I'm an avid wheeler but have never had this issue. Thank you

Probably a given but are you stopped or at least going very slow when shifting?

Yes I'm completely stopped. I tried it in the driveway before I hit the trails just to make sure I didn't have any issues.

well for one u dont wanna stop in neutral on the t-case, it can cause a grind. just go straight to w/e position ur wanting without stoppin in neutral.

does it still grind if the tranny is in neutral when you shift the t-case?

I always put the transmission in neutral when switching the transfer case. I go straight from 4L to put it back into 2H. The grinding definitely seems to be coming from the T case.

Info about this can be found in the FSM in the 2001 page 2456 it gives a trouble shooting area. The FSM can be downloaded for free from the Diy area.

Taken from the FSM

The synchronizer components allow the transfer case to be shifted between the 2H and 4H operating ranges while the vehicle is in motion. The vehicle must have the transmission placed in NEUTRAL, or the clutch depressed in the case of a manual transmission, and be moving less than 2-3 MPH when shifting into the 4L operating range.

to shift in/out of low range -
come to a stop
shift trans to neutral
with all your might, slam the shifter all the way through neutral to the stop point.
if you go too far to 4H, then bump it back one notch.
if it hangs in neutral, or grinds - turn off ignition, finish shift, restart.

I appreciate the advice but I try not to just force it into 2h. I just wasn't sure if this was an odd problem has encountered before. Like I said it's never grinded going back into 2h before. I probably should have stated it doesn't go into 2h unless the truck is off.

Low range is not synchronized. Grinding really isn't that unusual.

Even though the trans is in neutral, friction is still going to cause the output shaft to turn under no-load conditions. (t-case passing thru neutral.) Ya gotta shift quick, or, you get the grinding. On my truck, (slightly different shift pattern than yours) To go from 4lo, to 4 hi, I have the truck rolling VERY slowly, bump the trans into neutral, and QUICKLY shift the t-case. I still end up having to shut down the engine once in a while though.

OK as long as it's not something completely unusual. I was worried considering I have yet to have this issue. I'll give it a try with a slow roll. Thank you
