I'm not quite sure how I started off in this direction but I think one of the shops mentioned that their carrier didn't include the clips and if I wanted them in it would be extra and they said it works fine without. So I searched the question on google and some threads hit about benefit w/wo. I didn't want to put new ones in with out knowing why they popped out. And, the economy is a hell of a drug...

Well the retainer clip has a bigtime purpose. There is a ridge in that clip that holds the clutch pack at a certain thickness, this thickness is needed to make the clutch pack work. Go beyond that allowable thickness and the disks will not be making contact with each other, meaning your lsd will be just like a open diff. Good chances are the discs are already broken again.

I got rid of the 9.25 factory lsd years ago and replaced it with a Detroit locker (not for everyone). I am back to a disc clutch type lsd when I installed the 60's this summer not liking it at all so far this winter.
In short find a better carrier other than the stock lsd.
