If the truck doesn't have anything majorly wrong with it (vac leaks, burning oil, misfires) there aren't many other culprits besides a malfunctioning / burnt out cat. I would bet my money if you replaced it with another you'll pass with flying colours. Also, stick the stock O2 back in and return the one you bought if you can.
Yes,new CAT will be next , and will see about the O2.

Thank you!.

If the p/n is not approved, then why didn't he state it the first time?

Did he show you the number?

Replacing a CAT here in CA is roughly $350+.

Buddy of mine in a 99 Ram had a CAT also not approved from CO...and he was sacked to buy a new one.
Well i so him going under the truck with a mirror and a flash light i guess to see the numbers,on the CAT but i look my self and i only so the model number and year ,but did not see a serial p/n number.

Called Magnaflow and they said based on my model number ,that is a federal CAT ,and is not a Ca Approved Cat.

And no he don't show me the number, just wrote on paper the "CAT is Tampered" and the guy in the shop told me about it,at the end of test .

I think i so some CAT online for about $100-200 , Ca Approved, but then needs welding also!.

Here are some:

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,5808

But i have to shop around to see what price i may find in town here, and yes it could be from $300 and up.

Thanks.

the last 2 okay for California

http://www.magnaflow.com/02catalytic...&splityear=PRE

Called around to some muffler shops and the cheapest i find was $260 all for Cat Carb Approved and install labor.
or just the welding at $80 if i bring the CAT in.

Thanks.

Forgot to mention, That i called CARB to see, about the old Cat that was installed out of state, so of course he said that i must change that, but i asked how come i did smog 3 times and no smog shop notice the pcv hose that is not a "fuel rated" and also that i had a "non-carb Cat!" and he reply that the smog tech's just don't do their job!, and based on this info they may be " fine " cited " for not verifying right the vehicle to comply with Carb Law's.

Also he ask me if that first time i went to smog place ,if they did put a big fan in front of the truck, and i said "no" as i was there,i so what they are doing, and the carb guy said that they had 93' degrees in the shop that day and by law they suppose to put that fan ,and maybe thats why it could play a factor in the emission being so high!,even today at 77'degrees they still put no fan...that is required by law.
and plus i went today about 30 miles and then no fan in front of the truck ,so i guess thats one possibility why emission was even higher...
and regarding the shop temp,
I ask how he knows what temp the shop has? he said that the smog machine registered all temp's at all times when a car is entered in the smog system...

Also he ask me if i ever cleaned the EGR Passage , and i said no , he said if that is dirty it could play a big roll in not passing emission also!.

Anyway,

Ok, Today will be going to have a cat done for about $260 at some shop here in my area.

Now, when i was talking to that guy from CARB , he said that if i did clean my "EGR Passage" ?

i did not, and not sure exactly where is this at, so i can check ,maybe clean and what to use to clean it.

I did search to see , how much is a new one , and did find at autozone

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...36000_26128_0_

the EGR valve for $70 , now not sure if i should clean and where and what to use to clean it, or just replace it.

Thanks,

Valve is on the rear of the intake manifold. Fun to get to..... make sure to hit the bolts with chemicals before you try and take them out. Should be able to use a stiff wire bottle brush to clean it out. (a little one.)

Clean the hole in the intake manifold. They tend to clog with carbon. Carb cleaner should work.
