Default update on 4x4 2000 .

Found out I been driving it in 4hi since I bought it and is stuck there. Front axle not engaging. How hard is It to rebuild a transfer case or should I try to find and put one in? A new case is probably more than I payed for the truck. Any info is great

Unless you're a professional mechanic, too hard. Get a good used one from Ebay for around $300 plus shipping. A bunch of them come with a 3 to 12 month warranty.

If you got a seal puller it's really not that bad apparently. These t-cases are pretty simple. Plenty of write ups on the interwebs too

I rebuilt the Borg-Werner unit in my 77 Jeep Wagoneer with the 401 and 400 Turbo trans and it was unfun and I am(was) a professional mechanic and would seriously discourage someone not accustomed to such things as measuring lash and adjustments of gears and bearing clearance to avoid it. It ain't easy unless you're just throwing new parts in and hoping somehow it all just gets right the first time.

231J may have different spline counts, depending on year.

231d or 231dhd will bolt right in, and hook right up.
