Default 97 Ram 1500 Front Wheel Bearing 2wd Issue

Thanks for taking a quick look and any help you can provide.

I have an issue as stating above. My passanger front wheel was making a really odd noise as I was driving to work today. (About a 10 mile drive) After about 8 miles my wheel bearing dust cap went rolling away. I was close to work, nothing jolted in the truck as I listened to it roll away and everything seemed fine, so I just finished the drive to work and checked it out.

It looks as if a couple of bearings got loose, shot out and hit the retaining ring. The retaining ring managed to fall off after a quick mile drive to my jobsite.

Now when I drove another quick mile the truck was pulling hard on that side every so often. Felt like the brakes were being applied to that wheel only, pretty decent pull.

1) What parts do I need to fix? I cant seem to find a full assembly for a 4wd.
2) How much driving can I do before it leads to catastrophic failure?

Stop driving it NOW. You are already tearing up additional parts. (brakes come immediately to mind, as that is the ONLY thing holding the wheel on right now.)

Should just need the hub/bearing unit, and the lock nut. (which should come with it, they are not re-usable.) Bring the tools you need to fix it to the truck, or, have the truck towed. Do NOT drive it. It will toss that front tire, and then you will have all sorts of fun.....

Heyyou, look who it is.

First you tell me my tranny is shot, then you tell me I cant drive.
Remind me to keep my questions for you to my truck. ha.

Okay, I figured that is what someone was going to say. Im very glad it all happened when I was driving very slowly and at a location where it can sit.

I cant find a hub for a 2wd version of my truck everything is for 4wd. Not good. And obviously I need something from my local shop to get up and running quick.

Either way, are you sure this is all I need, mine looks like I have a good bit more parts on the bolt side.

that is a unit bearing. Do you have a unit bearing on your truck? Or do you have the old school with a shaft that the bearing slides onto. ie removable. With a lock nut on the shaft.

The two are completely different and not interchangeable.

Could you take a picture?

IM not sure when they switched over to unit bearings on the 2wds.

Looks like this should be a bit of a cheaper fix.
Can you go 2 for 2 and tell me its going to be easier as well? Ha.

Looks like it should be a bit more difficult honestly.
Will I need any specialty tools? Like a wheel bearing puller?

ive never worked on the 2wd on these trucks. But the basic setup is the same as other things. Like my grandpas nissan.

All you really need to do is take brakes off, take brake bracket off, and pull the steering knuckle off. The bearings just kind off slide on and off.

Grab the 96 service manual in the diy section it will walk you through it step by step

Got one at home. Cant wait to find my way home, get it and fix her up.

Should be interesting. Thanks for all of the help all.
If anyone else wants to add any helpful hints, I would love it.
Anything will be beneficial. Never tried this before.

Hardest part doing those bearings is getting the race out of the disk. Go at it from BEHIND, (stop looking at me like that.) there should be a slight notch where you can put a drift against the back of the race, and knock it right out.

Service manual showed hub/bearing unit..... which I thought was "wrong"..... but, never can be sure. Ham Bone is correct. You have replaceable bearings. I would be REAL tempted to get the inner bearing, and seal as well. (not to mention checking bearing pre-load on the other side, as that looks like someone had it too tight for that failure to happen.)

Yeah, I AM such a killjoy huh?
