Default I know someone's covered this but I'm asking anyway

I have a 1998 1500 4X4 5.9L

My truck i a low mileage orignal just has 63k on it. Are there any cheap mods that can beef up the motor to around 300 hp? My problem is that I also have a hemi magnum that supposedly had 340 hp from mopar and the k&n cai I added another 20 hp. Plus I have a 73 charger with a suped up motor equivalent to the 69 hemi now. So my truck motor is a dog compared to my others. i dont like the looks of the cai for the ram as it looks ugly when i've seen them installed. i have a drop in k&n but that's nothing. Do chips work? Not sure.

thanks for any ideas

if you do complete exhaust, sct tuner, hughes intake, roller rockers, bored throttle body, double roller timing chain then you might get up to 275 on that 5.9l...I dont think there are any sure-fire horsepower numbers for having all those mods installed together so i'm just sorta guessing. If you want to get up over 300 then you're gonna need a performance camshaft, heads, and a good tune from sct....gets expensive real quick if youre going that route. Shoot even the items in my first list will get you to a couple grand atleast if you get quality exhaust stuff

**** bolt ons. If you want real power you HAVE to tear into the engine.

heads
cam
roller rocker
m1 or hughes
4in crankshaft = 408 stroker
hi comp pistons

you will **** on those other motors for breakfast and have torque left over for lunch

also. no way you got 20 hp from a "cai" i bet you didnt get five.

I seriously doubt that a cai added 20 horsepower.... they may claim that, but, in reality, if you got 2, I would be surprised. Only if your original air filter was stuff full of mud would that give you more than that.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the suggestions. Being that I'm a yuppy IT guy, I'm not in the position to do major engine work these days. I've been spoiled with my hemi magnum...it books and sounds great from the factory. that hemi is one nice motor.

And on that, I will wholeheartedly concur. After putting a few hundred miles on a friends '12, (or, maybe it was a '10....) I didn't wanna give it back.

I drove my fathers Magnum RT a few months back holly cow does that thing get up and move. When it's time to trade up in a few years, I'm deff going hemi truck.

Honestly If I had your vehicals I'd prolly mod that Hemi Truck and use the the 98 for a work truck/beater and maybe add some bolt ons like an exhaust. Or since you have another vehical turn the 98 into a fun project like pulling the motor and working on the top and bottom end. Thats the only way your going to get 300hp as previously stated
