96 Ram stalls and won't start. Strange noise.

Too answer your question about black smoke. It smokes a little white vapor for a minute or so when starting cold. No black smoke at all.
I have a troublesome truck, but with all the info available here and from replies to my questions, I'm sure that I'll have a nicely running truck real soon.

It is all the time. moving, or idling.
The truck drove fine for 70 miles today at 70 mph then died as I exited the freeway. A half hour later, it started and I drove the 70 miles home. When exiting near home, I downshifted my automatic transmission to keep RPM's up, then kept foot on the brake and one on the fuel pedal to prevent stalling. Fortunately I never had to come to a complete stop until home, where the truck died and wouldn't restart for approximately 30 minutes. I rechecked the fuel pressure at the fuel rail and had a steady 49 psi. It idles for 15 minutes, stalls and won't start again. Acts like it wants to start but just seems starved for fuel.
The truck sat for 6 years. I found a Delphi fuel pump assembly that includes the whole shebang for $292 locally in stock.
Am I headed in the right direction?
I'm really getting demoralized here.
I'm ready to throw my hands in the air and cry.
Thanks for this site and everyone who lets me vent my 10 day adventure and to those who have mad suggestions.
More ideas are welcome and encouraged! I'll send out canned hams!!!

Find out what is missing when it won't start. Spark, fuel pressure, injector pulse.
If you don't have a noid lite, you can test for injector pulse with a test light. Put one end on the ground side of the injector connector, other end to the positive battery terminal. When you crank the engine, it should flash.

Can i do this test with a multimeter? i have analog and digital. i dont have a timing light.

I would bet the farm that its fuel related because it will start right up with the starter fluid. Does this point to a fuel related problem?

HeyYou,
Do you think that my technical abilities may be exhausted?
Put me near a computer, server, network router, switch or firewall, and I can slug it out with the best in the land.
My last practical automotive skills were rebuilding and rewiring a 1976 Ford Mustang II whose engine and everything else in the engine compartment was destroyed by fire. That was in 79.
