Sending unit sends signal to pressure gauge so it knows what pressure to show. A bad one isn't bad for the engine, but low oil pressure is. You could change yours out and see if it reads proper pressure, if not, install a mechanical gauge. It's screwed into the top of the block just to the passenger side of the distributor. A bit of trouble to get to. There's a special socket for it, or you can get it with an open end wrench angled downward toward the transmission. You also can just break the plastic top off the old one and just use a socket, but you still have to get the new one in.

holy crap that was a pain in the ***. Well i swapped out the oil pressure sending unit. (used vice scrips to take it off then spent $9 on the tool at the store to put it back since i had such a pain the *** taking it off)
well anyways. My truck still has the oil gauge smack in the middle when the truck runs. It has been that way since I bought it a year ago and I have not had any issues. How hard would it be to slap on a mechanical oil pressure gauge?
