Yeah, that's the sensible way to do it. IIRC, the explanation was that a wire wheel can spread the threads on the bolt. I've done it myself and never had a problem, that's why I was wondering about that particular piece of advice.

Given that the threads on the bolts are FAR harder than the wires on the brush...... and it is simply not possible to get anything hot enough to matter..... I think that one falls definitely into the "Myth" category. Far more likely for severely rusted bolts to become sloppy once you clean all the rust off.......
