I loosened the bolts for the valve body and the retainer fell out. Can I move the valve body out of way or do I have to remove it completely?

If you can, just shuffle it over to the side enough to deal with what you need to. If you still can't get it, you'll have to pull it.

can you post a pic? Is this the external linkage? Or internal? Service manual have any insight? ( I don't really do auto transmissions....... just stuff I have learned over the years.)

I DID IT! Got the valve body down. replaced the retainer for band, snug again. and I found my problem, broken spring in the accumulator. Lost a week from my life, ruined many clothes and yes dawn takes tranny fluid out of hair. Now to put everything back should be alot easier right? Chalk one up for the female back yard mechanic. Thanks guys again for all your help

See if the linkage came undone. Sometimes adjusting them causes the pin that hold is on the trans linkage to break, and then it slips off. 10 cent cotter pin will fix it.

Is the shifter really loose like it isn't connected?
