Try a search in the forum. I think a lot of people like Yukon. If you have a lifted truck place around you talk to them about the gearing

I suggest you talk to some of the shops around you, that do that kind of thing, and get a couple estimates. Let them source the parts and such. This is NOT something you can do in your driveway.

I did mine "in the driveway", but it took months of research and some specialty tools (dial indicator, 12ton press, ect.) It can be diy but just make sure you take your time and understand how everything works before you dive in. Labor for this is not cheap, but if you don't know what your doing it could get way more pricey!

Coming in late, if I have a RAM 1500 5.2L 318 and I have a 3.55:1 factory posi right now and I want the quickest takeoff possible while retaining street drivability what do I need to do? My pinion bearing has been bad for almost $3k. I have no money to fix it as I'm 16 and my parents aren't willing to help. I expect to have to replace the gears when I rebuild so I was thinking some sort of lockers. I've got 245/75 R16's right now but going to 265's in a few weeks and then in a year or so going to 17" wide rims.

If you do in fact have posi than no need for locker. If your broke no need for 600$ spent on locker either. You shouldn't need a gear swap just from bad bearings. What makes you think the pinion is shot?

The differential has been growling like a mother for about 1k. It was first just light "what I considered" road noise. However recently it has gotten loud enough it sounds like mud tires when you are coasting down the road. Its worst when you are around 20mph and coasting, it seems to mostly go away around 60mph however it gets louder and quieter with lower and higher rpms. When I let off the gas to coast it gets louder and mostly goes away when I am in the throttle. The guy who did my transmission said it was most likely the pinion bearing. I had the rear cover off about 2500 miles ago and all I had was small metal shavings. No chunks, the differential is getting warm and I'm just worries the bearing is going to go and the pinion or ring is gonna jump and I'm gonna blow the gears apart. However I don't have the money to fix.

Bearing and seal can be had for about 20 bucks or so. A lot cheaper than replacing the entire rear end.

You have to tear the entire rear end out to replace the main pinion bearing though.

I suppose it depends on which one is howling... If it's just the outer, that's a fairly easy project, if the inner is also bad, well, yeah, that's a whole 'nother kettle o' fish.

How do you go about replacing the outer, can I do it or should I just have a shop do the u joints and outer bearing all at once?
