Default Questions about a 408..

So I've been researching about stroker motors for a couple of weeks given that my truck is getting up there in mileage.

Anyways, I can either purchase a 360 block from the junkyard and strip it and have it hot tanked, magnafluxed, honed and all that stuff and also get a 408 stroker kit from Hughes and then put it all together

So 1700 for the kit plus whatever the block and machine work costs.

Or I could get a short block 408 magnum and just build it the rest of the way.

http://www.high-performance-engines.com/product-p/sp61.htm

I found this one and the manufacturer is local to me, about 45 minutes away.

I emailed them and they said they use 93-01 magnum engine blocks.

My question is if I go this route are all the magnum blocks exactly the same..? Will I be able to use all the stock sensors and stuff?

Thanks for any help!

Yep. All the same.

Be a close race as to which way is less expensive though......

As long as it is a Magnum block you are ok. Is the block you linked the one you'd buy? I'm not sure what .02 in compression costs $600 but WOW!! I'm not sure if you would come out ahead by buying the short block or not. As you said a lot depends on the machining prices plus the cost of the engine. I lucked out and got my engine for $50 but you have to look to find one for that price.

Yeah I figure after I get a good block and get all the machine work done they'll cost close to the same, but short block would be less work for me

Good to hear that they're all the same though! Thanks

Yes the one I linked is the one I'd be buying.
Yeah I figure they both would be pretty close in costs but the short block is a lot less work for me so I think that's way I'm leaning

I can just gather parts and then order the short block and put it all together vs finding a block and stripping it and taking it to the machine shop and all that

FWIW, the most important part of all is the quality of the machine shop. If their equipment is low end or worn out, or their attention to detail lacking, it doesn't much matter that they work cheap because it's only the first installment price they're quoting to you.

There used to be a half-dozen automotive machine shops around me. Almost every one of the major auto parts stores had one.... and there were also a couple independent shops, that ALL they did was automotive machine work...... Today, there aren't any. Everything gets sent to Jackson, or Detroit. I really don't know what happened to them.... did folks just stop rebuilding engines? Did the racing scene dry up that badly? (we have dirt tracks around, not to mention MIS being about 20 miles away.....)

I suppose I could drive to Jackson, it's probably about 30 miles or so.... oh well.

I have the same problem. The closest machine shop for me is 55 miles away. The nice thing about this shop is that the head machinist is a Dodge nut so he knows a lot about our engines. I'll be taking my engine to him in March or April at the latest. Then when it comes home I can start working on putting it back together. I have a ton of stuff I want to get done to the Jeep also before it leaves my garage.

Okay so I've been talking with the people that build these motors and so far I'm leaning towards buying one of their short blocks.

So if I buy one of their short blocks how much more stuff will I need to buy and what can I just swap over from my 5.2?

I'm already counting on buying engine quest cylinder heads, new timing set, water pump, probably a throttle body and some headers

I know I'll need a cam too

I was planning on swapping the kegger over to the stroker motor

I'd like it to look mostly stock under the hood and be pretty mild.

Short block should come with the timing set and cam. Ask for it if you don't have a list of parts it comes with already.
