Default Bad alternator?

Back with another issue.

Two weeks ago I had to replace my battery. Started fine afterwards and I have driven it a coiuple of times since then. I rarely drive the truck so it sits most of the time.

Well, today, it would just click, click when I turned it over. I jumped it with our other vehicle. Now, it sounds like it's try to crank but just doesn't. I did leave it connected to the good battery for ~10 minutes.

Called a friend and he said it sounds like the alternator. He plans on coming by tomorrow if he has time but I just wanted to get some opinions here.

Does it sound like it is probably the issue to the members here???

Also, I see some on ebay and I prefer to get a cheap replacement if possible. It's an old truck and I rarely drive it but I do want it to be reliable.

Do these look like they would work?

It's a 99 with the 5.9 V8 quad cab. 2WD.

thanks

Put a good charge on the battery, take it to your local parts store, and have them test the charging system. See what is actually bad....

The voltage regulator on our trucks is built into the PCM, and are, unfortunately, fairly common failure points. More so than the alternator itself...... So, before spending ANY money, see what's actually bad first.

Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately it will not start. After I jumped it, it sounded perfect except it doesn't start.

The electronics in these trucks are easily offended, and they find a low-charge battery to be HIGHLY offensive. If you have a charger, put that on there for a couple hours. See if it doesn't improve its attitude at all.

And don't forget to check the alternator fuse in the distribution center under the hood!

Update. Had a coworker come by and jump it off. He got it running (not sure why it didn't when I jumped it??). Anyway, while it was running it had 13.7 amps. When you turn it off and back on it had a slight hesitation to crank. Did that maybe 2 more times and then....dead. Nothing. No amps on battery.

He said that means the alternator was OK so it might be a bad cell in the battery. He jumped it again and I went to Advance auto where I bought the battery 2 weeks ago. They did their tests and agreed the battery was the issue. Swapped it out and all is fine...I hope.

Great. Took a bit of leg work and time but an easy fix.

yeah. my friend mentioned that. I'll try to keep an eye out in the next few days. I'm just not sure what to check for. It's not the interior lights or the radio. Any other obvious ones I might not be thinking of?
