Default Transmission Noise

I see a few having problems with transmissions. I'll add mine. Here is the noise it is making. 86K, was dropped by a automotive box store for the freeze plugs. Driven around 1000 miles before I bought it with no problems. When it's cold, it goes into gear and makes this noise but , not sure how far it will go. When warm nothing foward/reverse and this noise.

You need to have a chat with the folks that did the freeze plugs.

Maybe just a coincidence.... That sounds terrible, and something is most certainly not right. Since it doesn't do it in park (or neutral?), it's probably something after the pump.

Going to drop on Monday and see what's going on. If it needs rebuilt I'll do a complete rebuild with better frictions and do a shift kit from Sonnax (?). Then it will be good for another 150,000 miles.

I wonder if when they dropped the transmission the torque converter fell out and when they put it back in it didn't seat all the way. Then if they used the bolts to pull the trans back up to the engine block the not seated torque converter pushed on the pump gears and damaged them.

Not positive, just a thought.

I would think if that were the case, it would make noise regardless of what gear it was in. Since it only makes the noise in a gear that wants to move the truck...... I think the issue is further downstream.

Yup my thoughts exactly. Or the TC was smushed onto the input shaft and it finally stripped.

Well the truck is off the #1 fix list. 2002 BMW X5 4.4 misfiring on 5 & 6 cyls while out and around. Got all of the cool looking shrouds off and affected part/s. Coil gone bad most likely.
