Default Detroit vs truetrak

So this question has been posted a million times. For a daily driver. Full locker or limited slip. Now a little background. I've got a 2001 1500 that I've put a 408 in. I picked up a d60 axle rebuilding it. Going to put 4.56 gears on 35 inch tires. Now the cool stuff I did. I figured out a way to run 8 lug hubs with 2500 brake calipers on the front. To match the d60 8 lug hubs. So the million dollar question that no one can agree on. Truetrac or detroit. Roughly the same price. I run on the road alot but when I go off-road I want to be able to get where I got to go. Don't want a selectable because I wouldn't use it enough and it would probably fail when I needed it.

I have seen folks reporting the tru-trac being a bit weak with bigger axles, even bigger tires, and lots of power. The locker makes some funny noises when driving on the road, but, all in all, it's the better choice. Might also consider the detroit 'soft locker'. Relatively new on the scene, and supposedly not quite so noisy.

if you would like a selectable and you are only worried about reliability, i would go with an ox locker. it's cable operated like the lockrite for the cad. it actually functions exactly like the cad. bit spendy though. personally, i plan to go with the truetrac. i've spent about 5 min driving on ice with a spool and learned with a quickness some slip is a good thing.

what exactly is the "soft locker" I can't find anyone who sells it

I can find it for Toyota's...... Granted, the threads I was looking at were pretty old..... Reading some of the reviews on the 'real' locker, most folks didn't think the noise was all that bad, and even more of them liked the on-road performance as well. Most weren't seeing any undesireable behavior in cornering, etc. Just gotta be careful on the ice. (but, you need to be careful on ice in any event....)

I think the 'soft locker' was a clutch type in any event.

I'd go with the tru-trac. It can operate like both a Limited slip and locker all in one. If you want to even out the rotation just tap the brakes.

Edit, well maybe not a locker but a very good LSD.

No the Soft locker was a new design of the Detroit Locker. It was suppose to be a little more street friendly. I honestly didn't notice that much difference between it and the older units.
Me I like a Detroit in a rig even in a rig on ice. It just means you relearn how to drive and when and how it will react on the ice. Now I know tons who are going to say no not to run a full locker on the ice but if you are willing to learn driving with a locker you might be surprised.

Detroit Locker, (Toy had 35's, 5.29 and these lockers) learn how to drive on ice and snow. Powertrax No Slip Locker, not the Powertrax Lockrite Locker, are drop ins without having to set up the gears. The No Slip has better manners than the Powertrax Lockrite. Ran the No Slip on a Ford 8.8 with 4.88 gears out in back without problems and 35's. Detroit Locker will require a backlash adjustment with the gears you have. Changing gears or gear ratio requires gear setup.

I assume you are talking about a front locker. I've had both. I had a trutrac in my dana 44 front (and I have one in my rear), and I have a detroit (actually a yukon, which is supposedly the same as a detroit full but with some beefed up parts inside) in my new front dana 60.
I'm on 37's. I was happy with the trutrac, you just have to learn the gas to get both tires grabbing. With the detroit/yukon, I feel a huge difference (improvement) climbing up rocks and steep dirt hills. The downside of the full locker is steering. I ran about two weeks ago with the new full locker, and there were several times I couldn't turn my steering wheel even with someone helping me. I had the upgraded steerign box from psc on, but not yet installed the ram assist. I have my PSC assist on, but I haven't tested it offroad yet.
Synopsis, without a ram steering assist trutrac is is the better option.
NOTE: I have never driven on ice in my truck..
