Ok I rented a 32mm socket, fan clutch tool, and a harmonic balancer puller. Tomorrow I will tear it down and point the cam dot at 6 o'clock and the crankshaft dot at 12 o'clock, which it should be already. Then check that the rotor is at #6 cylinder and the #6 cylinder is compressed, correct?

i read something about a link in the chain being lined up with something. Does that matter?

What if the rotor is off? Then adjust the cam?

Or what if the #1 cylinder is compressed instead of #6? Then unhook the chain and rotate the crankshaft 360°?

I think the range was good on it. I'm going to check the timing tomorrow. Any advice?

With cam and crank dot to dot, 6 should be in firing postion, and all should be well. If the distributor wasn't disturbed, it doesn't have any choice but be correct.

Lining up chain links just doesn't matter on the 5.2/5.9 motors, that was more for the 4.7 with it's overhead cams.

Firing position, meaning i can pull the spark plug and the piston should be up?

Should i pull the valve cover and check the springs? What the easiest way to check #6 is tdc without having a compression tester?

Yes.

Bore scope is easiest.... can see the piston, and that the valves are closed. Otherwise, pulling the valve cover is next best.

Ok, and both springs will be compressed for #6?

Was tearing it down. The black plastic piece under the distributor cap might not have been lined up. Found 2 broken spark plugs. Lined the black piece up. Put the distributor cap back on. Going to replace the 2 spark plugs and try it. Hopefully thats all it was.

Rotor was lined up with #3. #3 piston seemed all the way up. Took out the plug and stuck a piece of wood in there. Didn't go in far.

These trucks have intake plenum issues do you have oil sitting under your throttle body in the valley ? Check that your gasket may be partialy blown they hate vac issues it trys to stall i gave it gas (rev to 2500 and let off around idle then all the way) and boom she runs good same issue previous owner said it was other electronic issue pcm or harness issue, nope, it runs great.. sometimes.
