Oily air filter diagnosis
What causes this? I’ve been too busy replacing ball joints, radiators, and transmission to mess around with paltry items like air filters. 😀
Additionally, what I am hoping to glean from this post is some education on airflow as it relates to the breather hose and PCV valve.

My breather hose is in constant sunction from valve cover to the air box. The vacuum from the manifold sucks new air into the filter and also relieves any pressure from the driver side valve cover while also sucking the PCV valve from the passenger. The breather hose is up stream of the filter (above) while the PCV is downstream (below at intake) so any oil vapor coming from the hose is absorbed into the filter. I have found an oily residue before but what the OP posted is insane! And on the wrong side!

PCV was good. (i.e., it ratttled and sucked air.) I noticed a lot of oily residue on the inside of the pipe stub that sticks out of the side of intake manifold.

other side was pretty good. The oily nature of that blacks stuff caught my eye. I really don’t understand it.

I put that filter in as new, I can’t remember when. I’m the one and only owner of this truck. My maintenance records got shoddy last couple of years cause I thought the ****box Dodge was heading for the grand beyond. 😀

What does the air tube leading up the the hat look/feel like? Kind of weird the way you can see clean fins in between the gunk. Seems like oil would saturate it all black.
And that's on the throttle body side? Not sure how the hat setup is.

Not exactly sure what your asking. I’ll pull the breather hose(the one that goes from driver valve cover to top of “the hat”) off tomorrow and give it a look.
