Just with continued use, my heat is getting better.

I had this issue as well, you need to make sure you have a higher quality thermostat in it and a good cap. Otherwise some coolant is allowed to by pass the core all the time.\\

This is the good style (notice the seal on the cylinder that moves, the cheap ones don't have that and coolant flows out there):

Yup, that was the first thing I did. Turns out, I should have scanned the truck first.... I was used to the temp gauge in my 96, and on my 98, it reads different, but, the engine WAS getting up to temp, and staying there...... So, I spent money I didn't have to. I got a Stant stat, and replace the stat, and the seal at the bottom.
