Hello to one & all, I was wondering if anyone could help me Please figure out what’s up with my 2001 Ram 1500 5.2 4X4.

When I’m on the highway and put the pedal down to climb hills or pass someone the transmission will gear down and I can accelerate but then if I keep it down when it reaches high enough Rpm & speed to shift back up into 4th in keeps going into 4th & then back to 3rd over & I over again constantly.. if I let off the pedal it’s ok but then I lose speed, especially on hills or towing. Then once this happens it does it more & more even at lower speeds and even on level ground. I appreciate all info & help Thanks..... 2001RamGuy

 

Likely a bad connection somewhere, a weak solenoid, or a problem with the governor pressure sensor. You will likely need to plug in with a scanner that can read live data, and see what the PCM thinks is going on when it is doing it.

I recently did a minor service on it just fluid, filter & gasket & also adjusted the bands 1 internally & the high gears externally, they were all way way to slack.. one the external (high gear) band I found online all kinds of settings for the 46RE from torque to so many inch lbs. which I got right with my inch lb. torque wrench to back off 2 &1/2 turns all the way up to 3 I tried setting it at 2 1/2. Would it help if I backed it off more up to 3 turns ?? Thanks so much 👍

 

I’ve also heard these 46RE’s are known for having accumulator springs for (3-4) gear being broken into 2 & 3 pieces and they twist together after breaking causing it to be only 1/2 as long as it’s supposed to be. I’ve been wondering could it be that simple 😲😲

you're welcome.... however, I was unaware that you had made adjustments internally...

 

Our resident trans expert recommended torquing to 72 inch pounds, and then backing them off 2 turns. Applies to both bands.

 

The FSM I believe calls for 2 7/8 turns on the front band for the gas engines, 2 for the diesel. Why the difference?
