Default Yet another issue on a 98 4x4 popping while engaged

Ok guys so as ive been driving my truck around I thought id try the 4x4 out to make sure it worked properly...... Well *price is right failure ding* there is an issue..... At first the shifter would only go into 4lo which I later figured out was change in the way of the shifter got that out of there anf it worked smooth....... It seems to shift in anf out of 4 wheel fine and smooth both hi and low but as I give it gas there is a kinda popping/clunking every few seconds seems to only happen when going straight and doesnt do it if the engine is crawling with its own power(no pressure on the gas pedal) or of the wheels are turned either direction..... Anyone ever had this happen? Anything similar? A friend told me my the chain in my tcase is strectched but I'm not so sure with it engaging like it does and working good other than the intermittent clunking also seems to have a quick succession of a few pops when slowing down/ coming to a stop

Id also like to add that ive done this on different terrain wet pavement, wet grass, and gravel same thing on all

Could be a universal. You sure it isn't a clicking?

Yeah, that front u-joint is notorious for going out. Makes some really rude noises too. Crawl under there, and have a look at everything, see if anything obvious presents itself.

I will do the truck is actually being painted but I'm supposed to get it back tomorrow I'll post up on what I find...... Will I be looking for just general play in the u joint? If it is bad Will I be able to grab hold of the driveshaft and get it to move?
as for the clicking it is kind of a clicking but somtimes it will literally thud and vibrate loud througout the cab on bad one's

Yeah, the front one is easy, the two in the CV joint though, they always have some tension on them, and its really hard to tell if they are bad or not. Gotta pull the shaft, and play with 'em. After replacing my front joint twice on my 96, I just spend the money and had the whole shaft rebuilt. Then sold the truck later the same year..... Ooops.

There is also a "centering ball" called a CV ball on the cardan joint that can go bad

Yeah, everything is available. That's what I had them do with mine. (for about 300 bucks..... had I known that, I would have just bought a new one.....)
