Default No power in overdrive

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 off road edition has no power in o/d. Plenum gasket and intake gaskets replaced with fel-pro all new bolts and aluminum 1/8in plate fix from eBay. The truck runs great. Doesn’t use that much oil anymore. It will use about .5 of a quart every 3k miles. It has plenty of power in all the other gears butt at soon as it gets into o/d it like I hit a brick wall. Just had the trans rebuilt to less then 3k ago bc reverse went out. All the engine sensors have been replaced and has had new spark plugs and distributor cap and rotor. The truck does has over sized tires on it(325/60r20s) and a 5 in lift. Is all this added weight the problem? Fuel pump has not been replaced and the up stream 02 sensor. It has after market high flow cats and true duals no mufflers. Could this also be the problem? It still sound like it has spark knock when in o/d. I am just absolutely lost at what could do this. I did a compression test too and all the cylinders where with in 5psi of each other (125-130) I feel like this is kinda low butt honestly have no clue ab that. Please help me y’all

Basically 36 inch tires, and 4.10 gears. (off road edition, those are standard) The large tires probably aren't helping. 4.56 would be better.... But, not an inexpensive fix.....

I thought about going to 4.56 gears bc later on I wanted to run 37s the axles need to be rebuilt anyway bc the front one is bent. I think the kid before me tryed to jump the truck or something and I didn’t notice it will I get deep into it so maybe eventually I will after I do a 2500 swap axles butt I gotta find them first and get the drive shafts remade to fit😂 thank you for replying!!!!

I think finding a good set of 2500 axles, and doing what you want to those would be the much better plan. Especially if you want to go to even larger tires.

Nice looking truck David. Have you check the injector syn timing? You need a DRB tool to check and adjust (snap-on, dealer programmer). These damn magnum engines use the distributor to fire the injectors. Rumor is that magnum engines like 3-4 deg's of timing. The spark plug timing is controlled of the crank sensor.

My 5.2L has compression of 130-140 psi depending on cylinder. I would guess a new engine should be around 150 psi or more. I have a LS LQ9 (10 to 1 compression) that has 170-180 psi of compression. Dodge minimum spec is 100 psi, my buddy has a LA 360 engine with 120 -130 psi and it runs pretty decently, but its a manual four speed 32in 17in tires, 4.10 gears.

My truck is a dog in OD, I have a 1500 5.2L 4X4, 3.55 gears and 32in tires on 20in rims. I'm not sure which way I'm going to go with mine. My cat was plugged up (but now is missing) and I run a 3in straight pipe on mine.

I have not checked the injectior sync and do you think I could use a live data scam tool to look at it? Or is this a dealer/snap-on thing only? I honestly need to get a live date tool bc this little cen tech harbor freight scanner ain’t got much more then afrs cal load and map sensor reading with it😂 the truck just runs too good even in the high rpms it’s got power butt I hate going up a hill and having to bring it up to 3.5k just to get up the hill @ 60 mph. When does y’all trucks shift into o/d mine does it around 50-55 depending on if I am in it a lot or not. Thank y’all for the help!!!!!!

I hear ya buddy, I just leave my foot on the floor. Here my $800 gem. Bone stock. I've been debating on putting a S366 turbo on the 5.2L and see what she does.

That s366 gonna be mean on that 5.2. I thought about doing the same thing on my truck and running it till I blow it up and find another engine on Facebook market place and do it all again. Probably need a trans after all that too but that would be some real fun doing some 4wd launches till I broke it😂

Not sure if you have seen this or not
https://www.ebay.com/itm/DODGE-MOPAR...wAAOSwo0BdXaBm

I have used garrett GTA 4294 journal bearing turbo (Detroit diesel super 60, 12.7L engine), T-6 exhaust 71mm turbo and comes with internal wastegate. The 4294 spools around 1600-1800 rpm on a 5.9L cummins and 1500-1600 rpm on 6.7 cummins when run as a single. You can buy them for less than $400. A 5000-6000 rpm 5.2/5.7 gasser will just be the power-up ticket that these engine will need.

Here is a good youtube video on rebuild the 46RE
