Used PCM
2001 1500, 4x4 Ram. Suddenly getting intermittent NO BUS message and no start, the 5v bus is still there and touching the right connector on the PCM clears it up for a bit (fuel pump suddenly runs, cluster comes back, will drive for a few miles). Assuming a solder joint inside the PCM is bad but they aren't repairable as they're filled with jelly. The price for a new or refurbished computer in a 19 year old truck is insane. I've found a used PCM from a 2001 1500 (post 6/26/2000 to match my 4/2001 Ram's manufacture date) that is tested and working. Is it possible to swap in a used matching PCM without programming the VIN and mileage? The truck isn't in an inspection state so that should be okay. I though I remember reading somewhere it would be fine as long as the replacement PCM had a milage and VIN programmed (matching or not, just had to have values programmed), it would only be an issue if the PCM didn't have either programmed (like it was new or flashed blank). The truck doesn't have a chip on the key, not sure if any of these had that or not.

What type of scanner does it take to do the VIN programming? Is that something a typical shop can do and is it possible to do on a used PCM vs a new one?
The dealer should certainly be able to do it. I don't know of any consumer grade scanner that can manage it. Need a high dollar professional shop tool. Call around to the shops in your area, and ask them if they can.
For the most part it seems either it will work with no issues, or it will work but have the ABS and airbag lights on and need programming to get back to normal.

I will do that. I know several have the nicer SnapOn units from when I was diagnosing an ABS issue on another vehicle years ago, hopefully those scanners are capable.
I have a cheaper code reader, when scanning it detects what type of interface, would the one it picks be what I’m looking for?
