Not like the plug is difficult to replace..... It's just a glorified freeze plug after all.

I drove it towards the front of the block. Could also use a punch to drive it forward.

Me and freeze plugs have a bad history so I avoid them if I can

Exactly........ That is what I was trying to get at. As you know, the bearings are a thin, soft metal. The tool to drive them out or in, drives the rear bearing from the front and the front bearing from the rear. The bearings have to go dead straight in, which is why the tool has the cone to hold it centered. Usually, if the bearing starts at a angle, its ruined.

I cant imagine anyone using a chisel, let alone removing or replacing without removing the plug.

Just to make sure, we are talking about the same thing. (cam bearings) Here are 3 pictures of a 5.9 magnum block stripped down to the bearings.

In this picture you can see the bearing down below the lifter valley,

This is a side picture, the cam bearings are below the oblong slots in the block.

This is a picture from the rear, before the plug has been replaced.

As you can see, from these pictures, it would be impossible to remove the rear bearing without removing the plug, and it would be very unwise to try to remove the bearings without the proper tool, let alone a chisel, not to mention impossible to install........

I did it perfectly fine. Used a punch drove it forward (as I did them all) and used a homemade bearing tool to install them. I know how the engine is setup I have one tore apart in my garage.

You used a punch to drive the rear bearing towards the front of the block without taking the rear plug out? I would like to have one of those punches, that would come in handy in several situations.
