5.2 rebuild kits
Great thread everyone. I'm in the same boat with my 2001 dodge, my 318 is in need of rebuilding. Most new iron heads I find online are pricey for what they are, I'm not paying $800-900 for iron heads (upgraded valve springs, bronze guides, larger valves), when you can get an aluminum head for $1200 (of course for a LA engine). I'm thinking about junk the dodge fuel injection system anyways and going another route. Would be nice to 350-400 HP (useable HP) out one of these old girls. I picked up a running 2001 360/46re for $500 (including the ecm), so the deals are out there.
hate to ask, so how much lift your springs good for on those iron heads? I would like a spring that could handle 0.600 in lift. For $200-300 buck I would go aluminum. I'm wanting to run 9.8cr and run 87 octane gas (yeah that cheap stuff). I would like to get my truck to 350-380rwhp, as that pretty easy basic street fun truck. I live in Canada, so hey gas is really pricey here, dang carbon tax.

Mike, I am probably going to get flamed for this, but it is JMO. 350-380 rwhp out of a 360 (used in a 4wd truck) is going to be impossible, short of some form of forced induction.
A point to consider was the crate 5.9 magnum, mopar used to sell. It was 380 gross hp and used a 234? duration cam. Hardly a truck motor.
If your set on building it, considering you want compression of 9.8, I would go ahead and stroke it. As far as I can tell, Edelbrock are the only ones making magnum heads in alum. and they are $2000.00 +
As far as using LA heads on a magnum block, I believe there are oil ports that have to be machined into the block. Shaft mounted rockers, custom pushrods etc
Then, your intake will not bolt up.
To your question on springs, My understanding is .480 is max lift, and even at that, needs checked and the springs are weak. (pressure of 80 closed and 200 open)
Hughes sells a spring kit that is supposed to be a direct replacement and I think they are good to about .512 on a stock unmodified head. ($200.00+ for those) (120 closed 300 open)
The factory head can be cut, to lower the seal, and allow up to .550.
To get .600 you need custom valves, etc.
Oh, and keep in mind, with much lift, roller rockers are needed.
We know each other from another forum... That being said, I will close with this, (and craw under my fire blanket!)
You have been used to the power output and mods with LS engines.....
Be prepared to spend way more, and end up with way less power at the end of the day.

No flaming here, and I agree on your assessment on how difficult to make power with these small block mopar's. I'm still learning myself and have not built this engine as of yet. I was thinking about going the blueprint 408/ATK 408 short block (its just cheaper, quicker this way).

Show just 1 dyno sheet and just tell us the specs of 1 5.9 making 500 rwhp in a truck with no power adders.
I could see it in a dedicated mud truck, but, not anything that would be what I would even remotely consider 'streetable'....
