'95 3500 V10.....original owner. I don't take this rig out much on extended hwy drives anymore, but did so the other day. All the buttons work on the steering wheel except Resume/Accel. That button is dead.

So I'm wondering if this is a common fault with age and if so....is it likely just a dirty contact within the switch? Or is it something deeper inside the electronics of the cruise control?

How do you access the switch...does the top portion pry off or do I have to take off the wheel?

The various switches just send a modified return voltage back to the PCM, so, likely just dirty connection there, or bad switch.

 

The switch block is held in with screws from the back. The FSM says the switches are not repairable but dowsing them in contact cleaner might help. You can also test the switches when you have them out, it might be a problem in the wiring as well. These old trucks have simple switches not the newer resistance style so all this is straight forward.

 

They do use resistors though definitely old school

 

OP I do know that someone in the junkyard got the faces of the switches off so maybe you can and then clean it?

 

Not until 98 when the steering wheel changed. The older ones are easier to troubleshoot because they don't rely on resistance values. See 8W-33-2 in the 95 FSM.

 

Ahh yes did forget about them

 

I've had switches before that were 'sealed' and drop them in an old Vibratec for about a half hr to clean....then maybe some De-Oxit if they need to be lubed a bit.

It's heartening that most think it's just a dirty switch. I hope the steering wheel air bag isn't one of those spring mechanism things. If the switches are all on a bar, it looks like I'm after the steering wheel. I'll check out the FSM.
