Default Tuners for 1996

Hey guys I recently discovered that a tuner can change my speedometer and shift points back to normal after tire size changes. I really want to get one and it may be the reason my truck is sluggish with the 33s on, the research and calls I've made they make nothing as far as canned tuned wise for 96 trucks. Everything is listing for 98 and up. Why is that ? Pcm is different ? I'm up in Canada so getting a custom tune out of the states may be challenging, I already reached out to flying Ryan and he would help me out with a custom tune because I didn't have any head or intake work done yet. I just want this thing to be back to factory speedo wise and shift points , what does everyone recommend? P.S I have a 96 truck with a 2001 motor, not a 2001 pcm

I have a 1996 truck and 33" tires on it. I also installed 4.10 gears front and rear, which threw the speedometer off even more. You can easily fix the speedo issue by installing another speedometer pinion gear with the correct number of teeth in the transfer case (if 4WD) or in the transmission (if 2WD). If you're running 3.54 gears, I'd suggest going to 4.10 gears to restore the off-the-line/sluggish movement of your truck, as I encountered this exact issue when going to 33" tires. Shift points are influenced by the TV cable attached to the throttle body. You can find several YouTube videos that show how to properly adjust it.

As an FYI, 1996 is the 1st year of OBD2 being used/phased-in into Dodge trucks. More functionality was phased in under OBD2 control as the 2nd gen trucks evolved from '96 - '01.

Yeah, on the 96-97 trucks, speedo is still kinda/sorta mechanically driven, there is a Signal Generator driven from a gear on the trans/t-case (2wd/4wd) No adjustment in the PCM that I am aware of.

Gears are going to be your best bet for restoring the power lost going to larger tires. The Dog is correct on ratio there. 4.10's are where it's at.

If you want a better tune for your truck, Hemifever, and Flyin' Ryan both offer tuners for your truck.

I have a 4x4 and I got 4.10 gears installed last year. How do I find out which speedo gear I need and where can I get one ?

Transmissioncenter.net. See which one you have in there, and take it from there.

I used a 35 tooth speedometer pinion gear based on the second chart listed in this link - https://www.shopjeepparts.com/blog/s...ars-for-jeeps/. I also have a 4WD truck and the short shaft gear mounts in the transfer case. I used part #52067635. I'm running 285/75/16 tires front and rear with 4.10 gears. The speedometer is reading darn near perfect after the gear change. Shop around for the pinion gear you need as it's widely available from multiple vendors.

That's good to know cool! How hard is it to change these out ? I called the dealer and told them my Vin. I told them I changed to 4.10 gears and what speedo gear to switch out with. They said on there screen for 4.10 use part # 52067636
that is one digit off from yours hmm

It's one bolt, pull the vss out of the tailhousing, swap the gear, stuff it back in. It needs to be properly indexed though, there are markings on the VSS housing, and an index mark on the tailhousing. I think the markings on the VSS, or actually gear tooth count.

I went by the chart in the link I provided in my last post. That worked well for me and the truck's speedometer readings matched up with my GPS speed readouts.

Changing the speedometer pinion gear is pretty easy as long as the hold-down bolt comes off easy. I had no issue with the transfer case that's in my truck with removing the bolt. I did soak it with PB Blaster before trying to remove it. The spare transfer case that I picked up in Maryland had the bolt broke off in the transfer case and I'm still trying to remove it. Tried numerous times welding a nut onto the broken bolt and still can't get it out. It seems to be oxidized in-place due to the dissimilar metal issue.
