Default Gauge Cluster questions

Hello, I have a 2002 Ram 2500 Gasser 5.9 with the no bus code. I was told by a mechanic it needs a gauge cluster. What exact year clusters will fit in? I know the 98-01/02 clusters look very similar but will they all just plug in to my truck no problem? My other question is will the mileage stay the same when i swap in a new cluster? Finally, will a 1500 or 3500 cluster swap in no problem? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

No bus means the cluster is not getting the info it wants from the communications bus. (basically, it's a network within your truck, that lets the various modules talk to each other.) that does not necessarily imply that the cluster itself is bad. More likely, there is some other sensor dragging down the 5 volt bus, that kills communication. Does the truck start/run?

It runs and drives just fine and everything but the cluster works

Think I might check the connections at the back of the cluster before replacing it out of hand.

What would be the best way to check all the connections?

Pull the cluster and have a look. I like to use terminal feeler gauges. That way you can see if the female pin has enough tension to make good contact on the male pins

I finally found the issue. I checked all the connections, they were fine, i checked every wire on the truck, they were fine. I don't know why i got the idea to unplug my headlights, but i did and the problem went away. After checking all the individual bulbs i found the one that was causing the issue, i put a new one in and now my truck is good again, but i have the abs light on and code 1687. I will clear them and everything should be back to how it was.
