Default 1998 Ram1500 stalls when first put it in gear

I have a 98 1500 with the 5.2l. When I first start it up and put it in gear I have to pretty much floor it to keep it from stalling once I put it in drive or reverse. Once I drive down the road a bit it’s fine and won’t stall out in gear. It almost seems like it’s starting in too high of a gear.

What gear it starts in shouldn't matter. It should not stall in gear. Might try cleaning the throttle body first. See if that helps.

It more likely the torque converter locking up and this will cause the engine to stall in either reverse or forward gears. Is the check engine lamp on for a transmission code?

no there is no lights on or codes. I can get it to move if I rev the hell out of it then as it goes it dies off like as if it were a manual and you started in too high of a gear

I don’t think that would be the problem. The engine runs fine except for when you put it in gear it stalls out

Cleaning the throttle body is free. (well, ok, a two dollar gasket....) They are notorious for gunking up, especially around the IAC well, so, the computer can't control the idle as well as it would like.

I see what you’re saying now. When it gets put in gear it can’t regulate the idle with a load
