Shouldn't. It isn't powered, and theoretically, the driveshaft shouldn't be turning. Though it may, just because.

I suppose it's possible if a wheel u-joint is clunky. Without lockouts you can't stop the axleshafts from spinning, but they're not under power.

This is reaching, though-- it's not likely a front axleshaft joint would cause a significant vibration you could feel in your seat. Steering wheel, maybe.

Balancing rear shaft did not eliminate the problem, so I am going to remove the front and see if anything changes.

Have been soaking and heating bolts to remove front shaft...will eventually be back and update.might have to borrow an impact or get it in the air for room to use a breaker bar.

So while I didn't get the front shaft off, I eliminated it while I did the run it on jackstands without wheels test.the vibration/ shake remains. Unless someone has a suggestion, my next step seems to be take it to the drive line shop to tell me what's wrong in the rear differential.

I was able to get another "driver" and could see the passenger axle moving up and down maybe in and out.pulled the drum and everything is covered in grease.i can move the axle up and down and the bearing is clearly shot.

That will indeed give you a vibration. And if that one is bad, replace the other one as well. Time for new brakes too.

Is Access to the retaining clips something I can get to easily under the diff cover without disturbing critical clearances etc on other stuff in there?

I do believe so. Just pull one little pin, which isn't always as easy as it sounds, pull the center pin out of the diff, push the axles in, pull the clips, slide the axles out. Try not to twist anything while removing the axles, otherwise, a bunch parts fall into the pig, and getting them all lined back up again can be a right pain.
