2001 ram 1500 no overdrive
Hello, I’m a new member and I just purchased a 2001 ram 1500 4x4 with 130,000 miles and it won’t shift into overdrive, I know there are several posts about that on here, but they don’t answer my question. Which is how long will it last like this? Fluid looks good a little dark red maybe…. It has a code for torque converter/ overdrive solenoid I think. But I’m fine with driving it without overdrive. But I’m curious if this means the transmission is going out. Thank you for any advice
Overdrive no big deal, higher rpm on the highway, more throttle response, less fuel economy. The torque converter one might cause more issue, if its not going into lock up is free spinning all the time and that generates heat. Keep an eye on the trans temp 200*F is the general area you like it, similar to coolant temp, hot days or towing, hotter is acceptable, over 230-240 id be concerned though
you would need an aftermarket gauge to read trans temp, either analog or an OBD2 gauge pod will read off the PCM, however thats sump temp, not always the most accurate location for the hottest temps.

edit: okay I didn’t finish reading your message… yes I’ll try the obd port
I would remove the connector at the transmission and make sure you have a good connection. You can add dielectric grease to the pins and that will give you better contact. Try this before replacing the solenoids. One question, you have a 46RE transmission.

im not sure what transmission I have, the truck feels pretty heavy duty for whatever that’s worth, but I’ll try cleaning connections. Thanks
