Yeah, I suppose finding a "new" one is gonna be pretty much impossible.... and reman is the best you are gonna get......
OK, so I ordered a reman pump, got it installed and got the trans back in the truck. Seated the TC and made sure it was seated, could here and feel the TC hitting the pump gear ears. Put 5 quarts of fluid in and started it up in neutral, pulled the "to cooler" line and still no fluid flow. Now, I'm wondering if when I bolted the converter to the flexplate, if it's pulling it too far out of the transmission. Also, when I seated the torque converter, it seemed like there was a lot of play. I don't ever remember there being a lot of TC play in any of the transmissions I dealt with in the past. Also, my truck is sitting on a inclined driveway, would that make a difference? I know your supposed to be on a level surface, but you can't always get that, especially living in the mountains, lol.
5 quarts simply may not be enough...... I think it holds like 12 or so....
I'll try putting a few more quarts in and see what happens. I've always been told to put 2 quarts into the TC and 5 in the pan. Then start in neutral and let idle and add fluid as needed till it's full. When I did that yesterday, the pan is still registering on the dipstick as full.
Somthin' ain't right then. do you have a deep pan by any chance? Does the fluid level change from engine off, to engine running?
Fluid level did change at first start up, but now it doesn't change at all, engine running or off. And it just has the stock pan, no deep pan. I also cleaned both cooler lines real well, still going to check and see if I have flow at the transmission here in a few minutes. Also, I don't hear any grinding or any odd noises coming from the transmission or torque converter at all. Could a stuck pressure regulator valve cause this? Was thinking about dropping the valve body and see if maybe that's the problem. But in theory, wouldn't the pump still push fluid?
If the regulator failed all the way open, you probably wouldn't get much in the way of flow to the cooler, I would expect it just recirculates right back into the pan. Also, are you testing in park? I don't think much fluid circulates anywhere in park, try in neutral.... see what ya get.

Nah, wasn't in park, was in neutral. No fluid flow in park on these transmissions, unless you upgrade it. Still wondering about the TC. After I seated it, there was a lot of slop. I could feel it sitting on the pump gear tabs and I could rock it back and forth a good 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. But when I rocked it the opposite way of the tabs, was just a little play.

I think that's pretty normal...... There is always gonna be some slop. But, two pumps with the same symptoms???? That's just strange.

The original issues that led me to the rebuild was a really noisy torque converter and slipping. When I tore it down, the only thing that was bad/wore out, was the OD piston support and friction plates in rear/forward drum. Original pump was also bad, which i believe between that and the factory check valve in the cooler line was stuck, is what caused the TC to go. Maybe the park/neutral switch might be sending a signal to the pcm that the transmission is park possibly? But when in park or neutral, the truck will start up no problem. I've checked codes and don't have any. I unhooked the electrical plug going to the trans and it will set codes for the pressure sensor and shift solenoid, but when I plug it back in, restart, then clear codes, they don't pop back up. I've tripled checked all plugs and linkages and everything is hooked back up. When I shift into any gear, engine rpms go up a little bit, but come back down to normal idle rpm. In neutral or park, idle stays normal. I'm at a loss on this one and half tempted to pull the trans and just junk the truck, lol. If I pull it again, this will make the 4th time I've pulled it, lol.
