I will say though in regards to the 4.6L and 5.4L triton engine, that they may not be the quickest trucks off the line, but they are an incredibly complex engine.
It's a very high tuned engine, and it produces a lot of power.
My dad has the little triton engine in his long box extended cab truck, and my god, that thing is such a work box. It's never let us down, and it's taken the heaviest loads before. I remember one time we put 20 80lb. quikrete bags on the back of his truck. It looked ugly as hell, but it took it like a damn champ
Those engines are also lethal if you modify them. A simple cold air intake gives something like 15-17 h/p. Put a full exhaust and headers with a cold air intake, you can conveivably gain 65-70 h/p, it's nuts.
They are reasonably good on gas
and they really look attractive. Ford did a good job making the engine bays look eye appealing with their triton engines
So far this year, theengines that needed replaced that have come into the shop:
1 x 5.7l Vortec in 1997 Chevy K1500; intake leaked coolant into engine
1 x 1.6l in 2001 Daewoo Nubira; Timing belt snapped, interference engine
1 x 1.6l D16Y8 in 1998 Honda Civic;Crankshaft snapped behind timing belt sprocket
1 x2.2l Ecotech in 2004 Saturn Vue; Greasemonkey left oil cap off, drove it long enough to empty motor
1 x 1.9l in 1998 Escort; not sure what caused it, but no compression on #2 & #3
1 x1.6l in 1994 Honda Civic; Very low compression in 3 of 4 cylinders
2 x 4.6l in 1998 & 2000 Expedition; One knocking severely, other seized. Both had oil
1 x 5.4l in 1998 Expedition ; #3 hole dead, PCV tube rotted through (common problem) and sucked something in. Leakdown test showed exhaust valve cracked, bent or broken. At 150-odd thousand miles, the extra $1,200 for an engine rather than head rebuild is the way to go. Besides which, things that bend valves also crush ring grooves.
Sorry man, but going from the 302, 351w and 460 to the Triton's was the biggest mistake Ford has made in a long time. Even the new 3 valve engines will have their *** handed to them by a 5.7 Hemi or 5.3 Vortec. OHC does not mean better, especially when the lobes are press onto splineson the shaft rather than machined.
i owned a 99 f150 supercab 4x4 short bed with the 5.4 before i bought my ram. as far as hp out put i couldnt tell ya but my 5.4 was very fast and very strong. it pulled in the city perfectly but on the highway it was just geared for gas mileage not towing. i call it family oriented. the truck was very light in the *** end too which would always cause it to lose traction real quick. i now have an 02 2500 5.9 and it doesnt have the speed my 5.4 had i dont even thing it has the low end that the 5.4 had i know it can tow more but i think dodge made these trucks dogs from the factory and they need alot to get them up to were they should be. dont get me wrong i love how easy my 5.9 is to work on and the look and sound of my ram over my ford but i have to say dont under estimate the 5.4 it is a great motor. i know this is a dodge forum and im going to be crusified for saying what i just said but its just my honest opinion.
Well in comparison of the 4.6 and 5.4, they are considerably better on gas than the 5.9L magnum. The magnum is lucky to get 12mpg. Also, I meant the engine looks eye appealing, so I was referring to all of the plastics and the cute fascad they made (now I know why, because they wanted to hide the cluster**** lmao). But no I still give the ford engine a lot of props. We own two fords, and bothof them never give us an issue. We own one 5.4, and one 4.6. We run synthetic oil in them, 93 octane, and frequent carwashes
. And that's just about it! No pinging, no issues, period. So I definately have a lot of good things to say about the fords. They both have never let us down, and are always up for a heavy load or a heavy tow. I also really admire ford and their transmissions, they are very strong compared to dodges measily trannies. Like I said, they may not be the quickest trucks or the most powerful, but those engines were engineered very intelligently, they just are a very compact little piece of property. Obviously the 5.4 is a great engine, I don't think they would have made it the base engine to start from with the insanely fast Ford GTand lightning lol. Don't get me wrong fellas, I love my 5.9L magnum,. I think it's rediculous. Its stronger than the tritons, but unfortunately she does suck on gas a little more than i'd prefer, but its what your going to get with a beast, and im down lol.

I'm not sure who it was. What aloser asking a stupid question like that.
Did you ever chain it up with your friend?

lol. Well the tire thing is true though, the bigger the tires, you actually will do worse in a tug off. I don't dare chain up to anyone because of damage, but I definantly don't do it because even if my truck is stronger, i dont have any grip on pavement with 35" mud tires lol, and ill just wind up looking like a retard haha

For one... bigger tires and lift make you up higher... think about it if your having a tow-off, the higher truck will pull up slightly on the lower truck killing the lower trucks traction while gaining your...
Bigger the tire on pavement the more traction (depending on the rubber, and tread pattern) The difference is increddible... I stuck some tiny 29in tall tires on the back of mine and half throttle would power then up to like 80mph no brakes or nothing... stick mine back on full throttle will only get them going to around 30 without powerbraking.
Reminds me of a story... must tell...
Me and 2 friends were at subway right, it was middle of winter and the parking lot was all ice... we were getting into my truck and this other family was getting into this f150 (97-03 bodystyle w/5.4) and this guy thought he was a hot shot... hes liek "were getting into the better truck" and me... I had to say somthing so I pulled out my tow strap and I said hook em up we will see whos truck is better... hes agreed to my suprise (he actually thought his ferd could pull mine) remember it was winter... we were both in 4high and we went... slowly i just pulled his *** to the other end of the parkinglot... I was suprised! I know my truck would do that on dry but I thought it would kind of stay in one spot with neither trucks moving becasue it was so slick... haha... this guy was like well... my engine was still cold! ahaha then left like a dog with its tail between its legs... not to mention he was the special fancy smancy "fx4" eddition and if I remember right that comes with a lsd in the rear... I have opens all around... haha fords suck.
Ehh I don't know about that bro. The higher the truck, you lose your chances. A vehicle lower to the ground sustains its center of gravity much better. Bigger tires do not necessarily help either, especially if they are mud tires. I run those 35" mud tires which don't do anybody any good unless they are off-road, and thats about it lol! If they are a bigger tire with a practical tread, then they most likely would help. But in reality, a truck that is factory heigh with the correct amount of tires will usually outpull a truck that is up high with goofy tires like myself. I would bet that if I did a tugg pull with another 5.9L magnum and they had something like 265s for tires and had the stock suspension, i would be it'd pull me across the parking lot if i was running the 35" mud tires with my lift. Obviously I have some performance mods done to the truck so i might have a better chance because the truck is more powerful, but if the trucks were both stock engines, and one was just lifted with bigger tires, the stock ride would beat it, hands down.
