Default New truck

Hey guys, I am thinking about selling my 92 w250 and buying around a 97 1500. I was wondering what you guys would suggest to get the best MPG. I don't mind auto or man. 4x4 is a preference but if a 4x2 is better on the gas I will take it. Any suggestions?

Neither 5.2 or 5.9 are very good on gas :s There are some things you can do for sure though. Whatever improves low eng tq is gonna improve mpg for the most part. Also toneau covers help alot!

4x2 reg. cab shortbox v6 would be the easiest on gas

As stated, neither of the V8s are light on gas [>:]

Yes the ram's are not known for getting good gas mileage, nomatter what engine size. 4x2 will be a little bit better that a 4x4, but its nice to have the conveniece 4x4 (dont buy a full size truck b/c of gas mileage). I have a 98' 4x4 with the 5.9 and i average about 13 in the winter and 15 when its nicer out. Manual will give you less problems down the road than an auto. 5.9 or 5.2 theyre both about the same mileage wise, 5.9 little more power under the hood. V6 has to work very hard in these trucks if its extended cab 4x4, stay away from that setup.

I was thinking a 5.9L with an auto and 4x4 was mainly was what I was going to find. I live in Kansas so the winters aren't always bad but can be nasty. Anything can be better than getting 10 mpg with my current dodge

I have a 96 short bed, single cab, 318 and auto. tranny. I have gotten from 13.5 to 20 MPG according to weather and the weight of the right foot.

Yes, you should be able to get better than 10 easily. My 98' Ram 4x4 5.9 Ext. Cab SB will average 13-15, i have gotten 17 during a 200 mile trip once on a calm summer day going 75. I wish it would do that all the time ha ha ha. When i bought my ram i also test drove one a year newer than mine that had bigger headers or something was done with the valves, cant recall, but the overhead computer showed 18 mpg going into a strong headwind at 70 mph.

I wasn't aware you coul even get a V6 4x4 Club Cab but alas you can. Same thing with the 06s.

Yes, but keep in mind how hard that V6 has to work compared to a V8. Load up your buddies or some gear in your truck, and that V6 is gonna be sucking down the gas worse than the V8. The V8 in any full size truck just makes the best sense, unless it is a 2wd regular cab setup, but even then the V6's feel labored.
