K&N FIPK No More

RE: K&N FIPK No More
Ok well it seems Ash and I have finally figured out why mine does not fit properly with the 3" filter. With the filter on the base, the filter is above 1/2" above the part that rests on the TB as shown in the picture below. That is the problem, its taking away about 1/2" of clearance which is blocking my top from going on.
This is the one I purchased:

I wasn't aware the flat base wasn't actually flat.

I'm curious as to what sound you guys are talking about. When you say it sounds awesome, what type of sound does it make? I just installed mine on my 96 Ram and the only sound it makes is an "air rushing quickly" sound when i get on the gas...is it supposed to sound like that?

RE: K&N FIPK No More
I just installed the 14" MR Gasket round filter http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p;autoview=sku and I have to say that I am impressed with the fit on top of the throttle body.
The only issues I am having is with one of the wire harnesses being on the wrong side of the TV cable to get it neatly out of the way, but manageable, and the stupid PCV fitting on the valve cover on the drivers side. Mine is being stubborn to get out, and feels brittle like it is going to shatter when being pulled out Any suggestions on how to get it out in one piece? I am going to replace it with a standalone breather element, but still would like to get it out in one piece.

To follow up on my temperature test, I've decided you can get too much cold air into your engine compartment. With the temps dropping below freezing, myengine didn't want to warm up. So I've closed up the flaps beside the radiator, pointed the cooling ducts (dryer hoses) towards the bottom of the truck, and moved my IAT sensor back into the manifold. I originally had it in the air cleaner housing. I only had one run with the truck fully warmed up, but it seemed to work a little better.
I've also observed this with my Spirit. The intake is set up to draw warm air up from the exhaust pipe, with a control valve that will close off this warmed air once the engine warms up. Stupid thing didn't work right so I unhooked it last spring. With the cold weather, my car wasn't running great on start-up, so I rigged things up so it is always pulling some warm air into the air cleaner housing. After doing this, my car did seem to have a little more pep.
So for those worried about sucking in the hot engine air with the round filters, I don't think its such a big problem, at least not during cold weather. Come spring, I'm going to open up the front of the truck again and set up the hoses so they are pulling in cool air from the front like RMIndy shows on page 8. From my limited and semi-scientific testing, I think you want your air temp entering theintake to be at least70 F. My truckjust seemed to run a little better, I used less throttle, when the engine could maintain the proper operating temperature.

RE: K&N FIPK No More
I finally got my Mr. Gasket setup yesterday after finding out the first one I bought was too big. Got it for about $20 shipped so couldn't do wrong. I would like to thank everyone here for all the info about it and ASH for immediately responding to my help through PM.
I did have a couple of problems, one being there was a random screw hanging down from under the cowl which was about 1" long and blocking the lid from fitting on properly. I hack saw'd it off and fit it on. The next problem was cutting out the holes for the nipple for the breather hose to fit on to. I didn't really know what to use but ended up drilling holes out for the screws and about 10mm circle for the air. Put the gasket on and nipple and screwed it down so that was okay. Then I put it on (it is in a very awkward position) only to find out the breather hose is too small to fit onto it. I had to soak in it hot water and get my brother to pry it open more with a screwdriver. I got it on about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch, it shouldn't move. The thing is it is touching a couple things including the intake itself which I'm sure gets hot, I don't know how good it is to have this breather hose touching this, can anyone comment on this? Lastly I took off the neg battery terminal to reset the PCM and put it back on. Found out the battery is dying because it wouldn't start and smoke was coming from the neg terminal. Had my dad jump it from his new battery in his '90 Sierra. All it all it took about 4 hours. Road testing was good, you can hear it suck in air and when you mash it you can really hear it. I was hearing a little high pitch noise for very small moments now and then but it wasn't that bad. Let's hope its okay. Oh and I've got some chrome polish to keep that lid shiny.
