I am looking for some direction. My truck broke down from a failing rear axle.. It was towed to a shop and the garage tore the rear end apart. After a $2,500 quote to rebuild the rearend. I decided to do it myself. They gave me the truck back with all the rear end parts in a box. I purchased a complete differential and a new ring and pinion and a master bearing set..

Where can I find the the specs and the drawing to put this back together. I have worked on many rearend years ago.. I want to make sure I am doing it correctly. I appreciate any help or direction..

Look in the FAQ section of these forums, and download the 01 service manual. Everything you need will be in there.

 

I tried the FAQ search and I keep getting " Sorry no match" I tried verious key words with no luck...

 

go to your local auto store and buy one of those manuals it will show u how everything goes together and comes apart they have them for every year of truck it should be around 25 bucks but it will have everything u need to know about your truck

i do not mean to insult your intelligence at all but something you may want to keep in mind is if you have never done this before you may end up blowing your rear again quick if you do not get it perfect with the backlash and tolerances. it can be tricky and very frustrating, so just make sure you understand completey what you are doing before you decide to tear into it. i would hate to see you grenade your rear 10 miles after you get it installed. its just my own opinion that on a job like this that if you are asking how to do it you may already be in over your head.

its a pretty straight forward job just mind the given specs and dont forget to double check everything .its very well covered in the manual. rebuilding my extra 9.25 next week. probably coulda saved some dough and bought 1 off of craigslist .i got my 3.92 rear for 125 bucks i had to pull it myself but that was like a 30 minute job with the old cordless impact.anyway good luck

 

Thanks so much.. That was what I was looking for... I was reading up and in the pinion drawings the have listed "Cup" I dont see that in the box of parts I got back from the garage.. Does anyone know where I could locate one of these?

Have a look in the diffs front pinon hole and you will see it. Its a seated bearing cup.

 

I just ordered some parts this morning to do the very same repair. I ordered a master bearing kit from Randy's Ring & Pinion, which includes: pinion bearings, carrier bearings, axle bearings, crush washers, seals, and gasket. All told, I spent $147 this morning, and they picked up the shipping. For those who have done this job, what are the chances I'll need to replace the ring and pinion gears, as well? I'm hoping that I won't have to, but 2 out of the 4 shops that gave me a bid said that it should be done, or it'll still make noise. Are they being truthful, or just trying to get more $$$ out of me?
