You can tell the best years were with new features. 1997 featured a new body style, which IMO, was the best thing that happened to the Dakota. It gave it that sporty look. In 2001-2002 you had the 4.7l that came out along with the 545rfe transmission, and you also had the introduction of quad cabs. In the couple years before that you had the R/T Dakotas with 5.9l engines. Im actually suprised to see the 2005 sales so high; its actually not too bad compared to the other years although it is lower. But after that is just pitiful. Not even the new 4.7l could save the Dakota in 2008 .... MAYBE THEY SHOULDVE HAD A COMMERCIAL FOR IT. Advertising is key for vehicals.
Engine choice and trim level would have no recognizable impact on that sales graph. The Dakota's sales are tanking because the Tacoma is a nicer truck and you can get a Ram 1500 for a few grand more. Not only that but Chrysler's sales have been tailing off across the board due to poor publicity and uninteresting vehicles.
I love my 2009 but I only bought it because the dealer was willing to take $14,000 off the sticker price to unload it. I use it for work and in a few more months when I have paid it off I will be moving on to a more refined machine.
