What makes it so hard to get HP for 4.7L?

Default What makes it so hard to get HP for 4.7L?

So I was browsing around and caught a video of "another brand of truck" with a 4.3L V6.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0RwH..._order&list=UL

He's naturally aspirated and made 300 RWHP. What does one do to get that kind of HP with .4 liters less of a motor? Granted, his torque was not amazing but still. Our 4.7s are 290lbs at the crank and he's 290 at the wheels.

It's strange though, I had a 4.3L 2wd S10 and I have to say my 4.7 seems much more sluggish in the lower RPMs, but really comes alive around 3500+

my dad had an 02 4.3s10 aswell. i drove it a few times. they are lighter than us. and the 4.7 makes its power in the upper rpms, unless you start adding a cam etc.

and as for your comment on the video. the reason why billy had hp gain issues was b.c of his cam and 4.10 gear combo. now hes got 3.55, new cam/trans. so hes making more power now.

300 rwhp is right at what a Diablo tuned 06 Hemi Charger RT with intake/exhaust and MSD puts to the wheels. Crap, an 06 Hemi Charger with 8psi boost only put 360 to the wheels. Our motors were designed to be efficient and have a long life. They were never designed for high HP gains. However, the 4.7L does handle higher boost quite well with good tuning.

My goal for next dyno is to have all of the following changes.
Paxton Novi 2000
Front mounted intercooler with boost limiter
Stage 2 transmission/Stage 3 valve body
224 aggressive intake/exhaust cams
Aubrun LSD
3.55 gears

The three heavily modded 4.7Ls out there I know of are Richie, DJwolf and myself. If we don't pull down good dyno/track numbers I will be conducting a motor swap.

V8s with DOHC with independent variable valve timing are doing quite well. It seems to take more work to get HP out of a SOHC.

No doubt brother, sometimes old school is the best way to go.

Yea thunder, I think I weighed the same as my Dak when I had a cu/yard of church blend garden soil in the bed of my S10... Maybe I should have drove it a bit like that to see how fast it was then lol.

Thats a V6 4.3.

that block is similar to a chevy 350 with the back 2 cylinders cut off, and some additional oiling. Those pistons are bigger than our pistons, and the stock compression ratio is higher than our trucks.

But to answer this question. Push Rods. thats how.
Thanks Eric, but how do you know it's the back two? Maybe it's the front two, or two from the middle! haha, jk. But really, it makes more sense now. That guy also makes 530hp or something of NOS. Crazy lil truck. I imagine it's easier for him to find parts too considering how popular the S10 and Blazers are for builders.

Our motors were designed to be efficient and have a long life. They were never designed for high HP gains.
I can vouch for that man. I get the same, if not better, mileage from this 4.7 than I got with the 4.3.... Providing I don't lay into the V8 too much. It has a potential to burn much more fuel but under my normal driving I get the same. I hope the longer life thing is true too. I had a monstrous blown head gasket toward the end there on the chevy with 120k.

I'm really impressed with the new 380 HP 4.6L TAU that Hyundai/Kia is making. If my truck came with that kind of power stock.....oh man.

Also keep in mind there's a lot of parts and aftermarket support for the 4.3l V6. It was made for quite a while and was one of GM's best engines along with its big brother 350. It also made a lot of its power very early in the RPM range, I used to have a '93 2wd Sierra with the 4.3 in it.
