Anybody still having this problem with the 4.7 HO? Mine has had this annoyance since about 1,000 miles and is at the dealership for the second time for the issue. This time the service manager can hear it and says they have identified it as a lower end problem with the connecting rods of two of the cylinders. They will either tear it down to fix it or install a BRAND NEW MOTOR. Mine has less than 10K on it. The manager wants to do a new motor and is trying to get proper approvals right now. There may be hope yet.

I have 27,000 miles on mine and haven't heard anything wrong on startup? What does the noise sound like?

My truck was replaced primary for this very reason. 4.7HO. Sounds like a want-a-be diesel. A deep clattering knocking like sound mostly on the right bank for the firstone to three minutes after starting cold.The cause is the valve lash adjusters.

It seems from posts here and the dealership that has my truck right now that it is not actually the valve lash adjusters. One guy in this forum had them replaced by the dealer and it did not eliminate the problem. That thread never did say what the final conclusion was or if the problem ever got fixed at all. I just hope a new motor takes care of it.

Graythang has the problem pegged though, thats exactly what it sounds like. What year was yours Graythang?

The 4.7 has a bit of a problem build history. There have been several complaints on the noise subject on this and other forums. When it happen with Gray I a (2006) I thought it most likely was a fluke with mine and maybe a few others but it was whole lot more than just Dakota engines. Now the 08 new deigned 4.7 is having rod and/or crank/head situations right out of the gate. Not good. Myself when a factory rep and a service manager said that we will need to tear downyour engine with 3300 miles on it I said you can tear down your engine but not mine. They ordered me a new truck that turn out to be a 2007 since it was too late to reorder a 06. Now the 2007 has 15k on her and so far so good. Just small idiot problems that the dealer has taken care of. To my dealers credit they where very supportive during the long and some times frustration buy-back process. IMO you want a replacement truck and you should not have to go through the carp of a replacement engine. Hate to say it but it will most likely haunt you with strange problems once installed.

Thanks for the information graythang, it helps to have the whole story. I'm just happy at this point that there is some hope. In the end once they tear into my truck I think I will have a better stance to tell them I want it lemon lawed if the new engine doesn’t work out as planned. I am glad to hear your 07 is fine. I always had a small problem with my 02 Dak that the dealer could never fix but in some strange way it gave me peace of mind. My thought was that I would rather have some little dumb problem to live with than some deal breaker like rod knock in the engine. Strange that seems like a premonition now.

I will keep this thread updated as I go through the process for anyone else out there with the same issue.

i went through the buy back deal my first dakota was a lemon and they bought it back because it vibrated at 35mph could not fix it I might have to try for two if they cant get the motor to not click. they told me it was the oil dripping down and to change to synthetic.
