Default Exhaust help

My dad just picked up a 2007 Dakota quad cab with the 4.7L V8. We've already put on a CAI and he's been talking about getting an exhaust.
I want to get him a cat back system for Christmas that him and I can install together. He wants something that's gonna give him better gas mileage and not be crazy loud.
Anyone have any experience with different kits? Let me know and links to web sites would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

forget the kits, waste of money. get a nice set of mufflers, stay away from flowmaster. sound is terrible. wish i could get rid of mine. magnaflow or cherry bomb are nice. then go to the exhaust shop and have them fab and hang the pipes. i paid 250.00 out the door for my set up. paid in cash so no sales tax.

I've got Magnaflow, also. LOVE the sound.

Yeah, Supedaks got the best idea... and have them take the resonators off too! I am running the Cherry Bomb Pro muffler, http://www.cherrybomb.com/products/. I am very happy with the sound and performance of it. I have paid around $150 for the muffler, install, and the resonator delete. Heres some pictures and a clip of it...

As far as what you wanted, there is

http://www.gibsonexhaust.com/truckandsuv/
http://www.magnaflow.com/ <--- On my old truck I run a catback system from theses guys and it sounded good at the time, alittle agressive, but I decided to try different this time
http://www.mbrp.com/index.php?page=home <--- I have a setup on my sled from this guy and it sounds good, just wanted to try the cherry bombs

I don't know which series you used but that's not true. Stating glasspacks sound like crap would be because their resonance falls apart in the upper rpms.

Mine sounds great. I always get compliments; two separate cases of which random local 2nd gen owners who heard me pull in a lot and walked up to find out what I was using. There've been similar events like that with Ram owners too. I've always found it odd b/c I expect people to question my jeep not my dak.

I've never used anything but loud mufflers so I can't say much about any that aren't. I can say that adding exhaust really won't help in the MPG. The best way to see a real improvement in MPG is drive a fuel sipping car.

My Flowmaster 1-into-2 muffler wuth exit under rear bumper is okay cruising at low RPMs. Under acceleration it resonates into the cab quite bad. I added a resonator in front which helped a little but it's still annoying. It also did not add any power. The only reason I haven't switched it to another muffler is that I only drive it every 2-3 weeks. My 1st and 2nd gen Daks were great with a side exit Flowmaster.

I'm a big fan of Cherry Bomb for the sound, had one on my last truck and put a Cherry Bomb Vortex on this one. Single in / single out with a dual tip exiting in front of the passenger rear. All I have for video clips right now is one taken at idle with my cell phone but it gives you an idea of how it sounds (much better in person obv, phone mic is a bit crappy).

Got a FM Delta 40 SI, SO. Sounds awesome. There's a reason Flowmaster sells so many mufflers and it's not because they sound terrible.

The reason I want a kit is because like I said this is for my dad. He enjoys working on his truck with me. It would mean more to him if I got a kit that did nothing performance wise and put it on ourselves than for me to go to an exhaust shop and buy him a gift certificate for a custom exhaust. That's why I ask about kits.
