From what I gathered from this guy, and he called around, is that 02-10 dakotas have the same 'pumpkin' if you will on the front axle. But in '04, they changed the insides to reverse rotation (basically just the spiral of the grind is facing the opposite way). Therefore 02 and 03 would be the only ones with the standard rotation, and those would be the ones you need to swap out for your front.
That housing is what you need to put the aftermarket gears INTO, eliminating the reverse rotation mess of our stock differential housing, again- only in the front. The only thing I am still unclear on is whether it must be dakota...or if we can search junkyards for an 02-03 durango, I will try and find out, your dealer would know.
Canadian----- I have been researching truck upgrades in my free time out here since October, I guarantee you will regret getting 3.92 after all that work when you know you could have had that extra bit of power. There are also endless debates about it giving better gas mileage due to an easier load on the engine, regardless of RPM (refer to link in earlier post). So yes, 4.10.

That sucks, I'm not sure I would want to go through all of that for gears. If you go boosted with the turbo the 3.55s will serve you great. There is a local shop that does gears, trannys, valve bodies, you name it. Give them a call when you get the chance (402) 905-2777.

I'm thinking the 3.92's will suit me just fine considering the pretty low gear on the 6 spd. 4.10's might have been a bit short overall.

I'd sure like to happen upon a good deal to do the swap. The price tag for a 4x4 is pretty steep.

Thanks Blown but I decided if I go turbo it's going to be a custom engine bay deal, too much nail biting with the rear mount turbos. Find any shops like THAT yet? haha.
I may be holding off on gears because I would have to rely on the junkyard to provide a decent one, and I dont many 8 year old vehicles are out of commision.
I just don't want to be sluggish, hopefully the T/C and cams will help me out off the line.
Canadian- you should call around and let me know if you find a housing anywhere! I wonder about the price and how hard they are to find. I'll be back in America innn 14 days and I will check around for ya'll too.

Front and back gears must be the same if you have a 4x4. If you decide on 4.10s, you will have to do both front and back if you plan on still being able to use 4x4.

My question is...since the gear rotation changed, would the rotation of the front driveshaft from the t-case have changed as well? If that's the case, you couldn't do what you're talking about because your t-case would try to turn your front wheels in the wrong direction.

thecause- No, I tried to explain it but it's weird. Reverse rotation has nothing to do with motion, it's all the same direction for parts. The word rotation throws people off. It is only referring to the direction of the spiral inside the housing, instead of a clockwise spiral, it's counter. It supposedly makes the axle stronger due to wear the ring sits. Otherwise it is just a PIA for us.
