Default Question about SC and other mods, 4.7l

Hello Everyone,

I'm new here. I've read countless threads on this site from my google searches when looking for information on my truck. I normally post on bobistheoilguy, but I finally decided to sign up here for information on just Dakotas.

I am not sure what I should do with my truck. The truck is an 05 with a 4.7L and I just rolled over to 99k. For an intake, I have already put a drop in K&N along with an Airaid modular intake tube (gets rid of restriction from factory air box to throttle body). After thinking about it more, I shouldve just done a CAI, but whats done is done there and Im just going to stick with it.

I ordered an exhaust last week from autoanything. Its an MBRP cat-back pro series dual system, and I should have it on the truck by the beginning of March. Im pretty stoked. Up until I ordered the exhaust, I was going to do a Superchips 3865 Flashpaq, but I backed out. Long story short, I got a little scared when I read the boards on Superchips forums and saw some of the problems people had. Now, Im back to thinking about trying it again. What were your personal experiences with Superchips? Im concerned with uploading the performance program to my truck with no issues. I dont want to be like one of the people who get stuck with a truck that wont start because the programmer didnt work so I need a little reassurance.

Im looking for a few extra horses for the butt dyno, along with transmission performance. I want to feel a firm shift that isnt sloppy, even if it snaps my neck. It looks like my only option for a power programmer that works is Superchips, since SCT doesnt support the 4.7. Here is where Im between the fence. Should I do a Transgo shift kit, or do a superchips programmer? On the forum, it was stated that both options do the same thing. So, what did Superchips do for your transmission performance?

Thanks for all you help, and sorry the explanation was so long. Im glad to be here!

Hello Eric,
Thanks for your quick reply. I just went off the info on SCT's site, but thats good to know. Superchips is much more user friendly than SCT when it comes to just basic tuning, correct? Im not doing any more mods after my exhaust, although I would love to do HO cams. Is SC the way to go if I do a programmer?

Where did you see that a tuner does the same thing as the transgo? The shift kit literally bolts on to the transmission and stops the 'dual gear' function making the shifts firmer, the programmer plugs in and changes the shift points. This isn't from experience because I haven't installed these YET, only ordered them, but after a lot of research this is what I gathered.
I would go with a Flashpaq if you aren't heavily modding. Also, I would LOVE to hear that exhaust on your truck... I CANNOT decide what I want. I'm between yours, gibson, and cherry bomb. Thanks!

As long as you don't stack tuners you should be fine. The only issue I've had is stacking an SCT over a Superchips Cortex. I just ordered a Stage-3 Tranny Valve body from Sharadon Performance. When it gets here, I will post up more details.

Hello Trucky and Blown287!

First off, SHARP TRUCKS! I love both of them! And I have seen some of your videos Blown287, and I am impressed!
I was reading on the forum there, and Ron, one of the service reps said something. Honestly, it sounded wierd to me to because I know for the shift kit, the pan needs to be dropped and the throttle body removed. I couldve read it wrong, too. So maybe, do both a programmer and shift kit?
How does the Superchips make the transmission shift firmness feel by itself?

And Trucky, I will definetly post some sound clips for you when I get the exhaust. I have done every search I could think of and I have come up with 3 videos that have decent quality of this exhaust. 2 are from memebers here, and the other is a youtube video. Ill post the links below, I dont know if you have seen any of them before. 2 clips are of the single MBRP on Hemi's, and the one is of an MBRP dual on a Dakota. Just scroll down on the 2 DF pages and the videos are on them. Ill get back to you when I get mine on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaCiEy5WGsg - Flowmaster vs MBRP video on a Ram w/ Hemi
https://dodgeforum.com/forum/4th-gen...stainless.html - MBRP on a Hemi, cold start and rev
https://dodgeforum.com/forum/3rd-gen...installed.html - MBRP Duals on Dakota 4.7L

PS- Definetly use desktop speakers, or something with good bass reproduction. Lap top speakers do these videos no justice. Enjoy.

first off i would like to say hello an welcome. if the only thing you are going to do is an exhaust. than the sc tuner is right for you. i was the lucky one who uploaded the sc program an it fried my pcm. sc stepped up to the plate, gave me a rental for 1 week why they tried to figure out went wrong. you will like the sc tuner. just follow the on screen display an it is fool proof.

Thanks for the warm welcome superdak05! This is what scares me most. The SC would be one of those small projects I would do without my dad knowing. He wouldnt be very proud if I dropped $340 in to a programmer and it messed up my truck. Im now sure here. Was there a reason why it fried your pcm? Was it user error, or the programmer itself? And Im not looking to call you out, just looking to learn from others.

Thanks for the links and the compliments! My truck is getting overhauled when I get back from the middle east though, I will need a new sig for all my plans!
For superdak's tuner, it was a bad tuner...they were still working out the kinks. A lot of members own the 3865 and love it. If there was ever an issue, superchips fixed it up. I say go for it.

No problem Travis. Thats good to hear about the tuners. I think I will give it a go, and see what it does. I hope it makes my trans shift a little firmer, then I can just skip the Transgo kit all together.

And also, thank you for your services for U.S. God bless!
