While changing my oil for the first time I saw that my rear diff was leaking.
It is leaking from the pinion seal. What do I need other than the pinion seal to do this job? I know on a GM I would need a new nut and crush collor. Also what are you guys using for diff fluid?

Is this normal for an 05 with only 30k. I hope it is a resault of the truck sitting in a garage for two years before I got it, and not just a dodge problem.


By the way Dodge did a great job on the oil drain plug location!!!!

I use Mobil 1 SAE 75W-140 synthetic gear fluid since I swithced to 4.10 gears. No leaks so far and I'm over 100k.

I wonder if the guy who designed that is sitting somewhere right now, reading on all the boards of Dakota owners who complain about this and is laughing to himself for being such a genious.

If they put a drain plug for something like a transmission, coolant system, or something like that it wouldnt be bad because you dont service them often. But you are supposed to be changing your oil every 3-5k, and thats where they decide to put the plug. Not to mention, oil makes a mess the way it is.

 

Mine was leaking at the pinion seal at 35,000 miles. It was repaired under warranty, but I have been keeping my eye on it since.

As far as the oil thing goes...the V8 guys got screwed there, the V6 guys have the drain plug free and clear, and we also have a cool little slide built in under the oil filter, to control all the oil filter flow that spills out when unscrewing it. It was a genius idea, I have never gotten a drop of oil on my hands.

 

Its amazing how the simple things amaze us.

Monkey does that slide have a Part Number? It would be awesome if I could order one from the dealer Then I was be mess free with the fumoto valve and the oil slide
