Maybe he ment the hitch reciever that it's mounted with bolts to the hitch!

I am pretty sure that this is all I am missing. I looked under the truck and I have a plate where the receiver can go. There is also wirring underneath. What is the model # of that receiver?

Thx for your help

If your truck did come with the tow pacakage it should have had 4 pin and 7 pin connection and the factory receiver style hitch. I have to say If he took the factory hitch, it bolts to the frame and part of your wiring harness should be "dangling" at the back. I have an 08 and it was factory wired for 4 pin (but this is not "tow pacakage"). If you want the factory style receiver hitch go to a collisions parts catalog and get the part number and you can order online. The factory style is an easy install. You can certainly go with an after market, I wanted a cleaner factory look.

A couple easy things to look for to confirm the tow package is the tow/haul button at the end of the gear shifter and the power steering cooling. To confirm the power steering cooling look through the grill at the front of the truck. If you see cooling lines in front of the rad you have the power steering cooling.

Thanks for all the information its been bery helpful. I tried searching online for a photo of the installation of the receiver mentionned above but couldn't find one. From treading the instruction manual with the curt receiver I have a hard time figuring out where it will go. I have to holes in the round tubing and two larger holes (chain plate) below. The bolts provided with the kit seem to be too short to go through the tubing.

If one of you as a picture of the installation I would appreciate it. I don't want to spend the money and find out I am missing another piece.

Thanks

I think this is a misprint. Not sure they put a decent set of shocks in ANY Dakota since 2005....

A few points:
  • The Curt Mfg #13229 (pictured above) is about $75 on amazon.com, with free shipping if you're a "Prime" member. You'd have to be nutz to pay the $150 MSRP.
  • And yes, the above receiver comes with a really inappropriate bolt. The head is countersunk, even though the step bumper is not; and the head requires a 12mm Allen head socket -- which is almost impossible to find. Simpler just to replace the bloody bolt altogether for about a buck: 3/4-10 (coarse) x 2.5" or so, with a standard hex head (1-1/8"). Moreover, it's almost impossible to apply the proper torque with such a tiny tool.
  • My own solution was to use, in place of a bolt, a stainless steel "Convert-a-Ball" with a 3/4-10 x 2.5" shank. I now have BOTH 1-7/8" and 2" ***** readily available for light-duty towing right there on the bumper at all times. (See attached image)
  • When I bought my first Dakota in 1992, the lower (numerically higher) 3.92 axle ratio was part of the "tow package". Not sure if that's still true, but that will go a long way toward increasing your GCVW rating.
  • Here's a link to an Online VIN Decoder that's pretty comprehensive. For those that require instant gratification, rather than writing to Chrysler.
