2006 4.7 HO HP vs 2009 4.7 HP
So I ran the numbers last night, just because I had two different people tell me two different things and found out after all the BS that the difference between the two engines is about 17 HP at the same rpm.
My 4.7 HO has a 260 HP @ 5200 RPM, while the newer 4.7, (not a HO) they show a 302 @ 5650 RPM. But when you do some math, the new 4.7 has 277 HP @ 5200 rpm.
So whats the big deal? Well, the thought has come to mind to get a full size Ram 1500, but I'm not really happy with the towing of my 4.7, so I figured I'd get the 5.7 Hemi. One guy said the new 4.7 has much more HP, well, when you compare apples to apples, 17 isn't that much.
Am I reading this wrong?

That's probably about right. I have a Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 HO and have driven a couple newer ones with the 4.7. IMO the HO makes better power/torque down lower in the rpm band, but the newer designed 4.7 revs out higher or makes better power in the mid/upper rpm band. I've never really looked at dynos for either, but that's my "butt dyno" perception, anyway.
However, if you are looking at a full size Ram, get a Hemi. Better power, better torque for towing and it gets at least the same fuel economy of the smaller 4.7 if not even a tad better...

The best dyno I've seen on a 08 4.7l is 247 rwhp. All I know is that it the best Superchips has gotten out of a 08 Ram 4.7L is 247 rwhp. Thats not bad considering that is what an 04 Hemi Ram puts down stock. The average has been been around 220 rwhp which is low for a motor rated at 315 crank.

If you want a powerful HO 4.7L with good gas mileage, run boost. Find a good blower or turbo setup and get better gas mileage and more power than a Hemi.
If you want great aftermarket support in a bigger engine, do a Hemi Swap.
If you want a Hemi without doing a swap, buy a Ram.
I still think Hemifever could get some great numbers out of the new 08 4.7L in one of our trucks (05-07) with an SCT tune.

i thought the weight difference between a ram and a dakota is only 300 or so lbs? or did i hear incorrectly.
Well, horsepower comparisons are kind of stupid. Yes, at certain rpms, one engine might make "almost" as much power as a different engine. Yet, at a different rpm, the lower HP engine doesn't come close to making that kind of power. So, the comparison of the old and new 4.7L HP isn't fair unless you compare them at their highest HP rpms. For instance, the new 4.7L makes peak power at 5650 rpms. So, how much power does the old 4.7L make at 5650? Dyno graphs are what tell the tale of usable power, not just HP ratings.
That is what I have read when comparing the 03 Ram 4.7l Quad Cab to the 05 Dakota 4.7l Quad Cab. There is less than 400lbs difference in weight; but the Dakota is supposed to compete with the half ton truck market. Regardless, the new Dakota is a very heavy truck.

thats part of what doomed the Dakota imo, they marketed it directly against the Ram.

So you were right in your statement.
