Default Looking to buy 3rd Gen

Hey Guys,
I've been in the 2nd Gen forums for a few years now...looking to possibly get a 3rd gen Soon.

Looking at a 2005 Laramie 4.7HO 4wd. Has 60,125 miles on it.
The Tires are decent, the intererior looks mint but the body/paint could use some work. Honestly just looks like its been used as a truck, ALOT of nicks and some pretty good dings and the front left bumper is pretty ugly (the "chrome" part of the bumper is peeling off)...however I'm hopeing this could be in my favor price wise.

The stealership is asking $15,500. I did a quick KBB look up and even if the body was in "GREAT" condition KBB says about $12,500.

I know I'm giving the barest of Info to you guys but thats really all i know. I havnt talked to anyone yet i've only stopped by after hours and looked at the truck on my own.

What do you guys think is a realistic "out the door" price for this truck?
Any other info you guys would need let me know and i'll try to answer..maybe i just forgot to mention it already.

Thanks for any and all input guys.

Bryan

the HO motor will make up for the body work. with a few mods the HO comes to life and can rip around really good. as for price not a clue.

$15,500 is too much. With gas prices still high I would offer 12,500 and walk away if they don't bite.

I agree. Always low ball. Once you set a price its hard to go lower.
Key points to use
- Not many sold
- Horrible gas millage
- Gas prices
- Higher Millage
- Older truck
- Find out how long its been sitting on the lot

Thanks for the input guys.

I know its been on the lot for a few weeks since i first noticed it.

I will more than likely be trading in my wifes 2005 Liberty for it....well bought her a new car so now its mine..anyway.
The Liberty has 90k miles on it...inside and out it is in mint condition...outside is MUCH better than the Dakota. KBB for the Liberty is just shy of 11k. Looking to get away without paying more than 2k out of my pocket.

In addition i'll be selling my 97 Dakota.
So really just looking for "pros" to tell my wife so she will "let" me buy the 05 Dakota without to much of an attitude.

Anything else guys and im listening.
Thanks!
Bryan

OK, if you decide you REALLY want the truck:

1. Go to the dealer with the Liberty and the title in hand.
2. Go in and grab a sales guy, don't let him come to you.
3. Spend a good amount of time looking at the truck, keep bringing up the negatives with him.
4. Tell him you want to trade EVEN for the truck. He will most likely say he will not be able to do it, tell him you are serious (whip out the title of the Jeep at this point).
5. When he comes back with "Your jeep and X amount of dollars, tell him No way, look at the condition of my Jeep, it will sell much easier than your truck, and they are the same trade in value in KBB (not sure of this, did not check, but do it either way).
6. If he come back with a lower $$$, say NO WAY again. when he starts to make excuses, get up and start to walk away.

I bet you do not make it to the parking lot before he comes to you. If he does not, he already has your number, he will be calling you later with SOME kind of offer BETTER or the SAME as before.

I bet you can pull this off, the Dakota is a hard sell for them. Worst case, you give them SOME money (like $500 plus your Jeep (plus takes, tags, etc).

I bet they paid $8k for the Dakota, and they have the price high right now because it has not sat there too long (yet). They are going to look at your Jeep and know they can flip it easier than the Dakota, and will get their $$ out of it.

My 2cents.

P.S. I have done this same thing before, I wound up giving them $300 plus my trade in (both vehicles were within $1000 in value (trade in or retail) in KBB.

Good Luck, let us know how you make out!

Another thing to look at would be the condition of the tires and the front struts. If the salesman wants you to pay some cash, the truck should have good tires. I say the struts too because the factory ones are complete crap.

Thanks guys for all the input and info. Good stuff. The tires are decent on the truck however they are no names. Will deffinately look into the Struts though. I'm sure at 60k they are ready to be replaced but havnt.

I stopped to look at it again today. Lots of little things wrong with the paint/body. Nothing major..like i said it just looks like its been used as a truck.

Anyone ever use car fax? I pulled the VIN number on it and it said like 32 items..but i dont want to spend the$50 to get the report.

Thanks for the info Hammond. I'm very optimistic that i can get close to a trade right now based on your advice.

Now the tough part. Have to talk the wife into it...she does NOT want to get rid of the Jeep because "we know what we have"
