Mine has smoked a couple of times as well. Seems to be a random event. Makes me worry as I only have 5K on mine and every now and then I here a slight ticking when its idling. Worries me, will it get better or what will it be like at 80k?

I saw this on our Citadel about 2 times, but its never done it again. The truck now has about 4,000 miles on it.

I wouldn't worry bout the slight ticking. I have heard many 5.7 hemi engines with it. Mostly just on start up and goes away

Default Smoking Hemi

Hey follow owners, I also have a 2011 5.7 Hemi Durango that smokes on start up. If I park in my driveway that's on a incline. It doesn't matter if the truck is hot or cold. At times the smoke is so bad the smoke covers the hole truck. I had this problem from day one and had it at the dealership a few times. The dealership states they're aware of the problem and they are working on designing a new oil pan that will fix the problem. Have you guy get the same answer from your dealer? I think my dealer is blowing smoke up my butt!!

I'm thinking it is a problem with the heads rather than the oil pan. It either has to be a drain problem or a valve seal problem with the multi-displacement system when parked on an incline.

Default Smoking Hemi

I said the same thing to my dealer. But the 5.7 Hemi been around along time. The new Durango is a new body and they had to change the oil pan to fit the Durango. Some how vaccum is pulling the oil through the pvc into the intake. My intake was full of oil when the deal removed it. The dealer said they are working on the problem and it's been six months!!!!!!

There is no vacuum at the PCV when the engine is off. There is no way for the oil to be pulled up out of the pan and into the combustion chamber with the engine off. It must be an issue with the top end.

This is why BT created the catch can. By design, oil vapor is sent from the crankcase, through the PCV and back into the intake to be burned. The harder you get on it (looking at you R/T drivers) the more oil vapor collects in the intake. When you park on an incline the oil flows down and forms a 'puddle'. When the puddle is large enough the oil drips down into the engine where it sits until you fire her up and then it is immediately drawn in and burned via combustion.

This is the way HEMIs are and have been this way since 2006. Get a catch can, limit the amount of oil that can pass through the PCV and the smoking will stop.

Mine has done it a few times and I do go thru more oil than I should. I know the catch cans will fix it but dont you think it is kind of unreasonable to buy a new truck and Chryslers expects the customer to install a catch can?
