Lightbulb Aftermarket Fog Light Question

As we all know, there are a lot of complaints with the stock fog lights. Has anyone done or researched an aftermarket lamp replacement? My main concerns would be wiring and keeping them "state inspection" legal. Is it possible to cut the oem harness off, splice it to the wires of a new lamp assembly and keep stock functionality?

While I'm at it... if this is not possible, what are the forum's recommendations for a better bulb (besides HID because of melting issues)?

It's really simple to cut the factory fog light plug off and splice on a new on that fits the bulb your new fog lights use. Just a simple power and ground. Or, if you don't wanna hack up your factory wiring, you can make a custom adapter like I did, then add the new bulb pug to that: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/3rd-gen...iring-diy.html.

As for better bulbs, I personally don't have any issues with my stock fogs with HID's, but I've only had the truck a month (well 2 months, but it's spent almost a month in the shop). Whatever kind of halogen bulb you may add you will likely need a wiring harness to power them as most halogen bulbs are over 55w, while the Durango uses only 24w bulbs. A good alternative could be some of those high output LED bulbs, but typically they don't put out as much usable light as halogens/HID because LED is directional light. You can try some of the ones that have like 26 LED's in one bulb to get the best output from LED. I personally prefer HID though!

DJ,
Thanks for the info and link!

Know anything about the H16 fitment? A few websites claim they use the same harness, but a 35w bulb instead of the 24. There are a few color options with the H16.

Depends on Use, if you are going for color match. i ordered som LED Fogs that have the ps24x or whatever that part number is and i think it looks great and it is slightly bluer than stock HIDs, no cutting or splicing just click in the harness plug in the bulb to the socket and good to go. If your looking for function i wouldnt know lol i just hated the difference in color. as my fogs dont add that much function as it isnt foggy in Utah and it isnt my daily driver. good luck

2012sxt, do you happen to have a part number? Did you try to color match with the HIDs? I've gone the route of the LEDs but like others have mentioned, not that much usable light.

I color matched with my aftermarket hids and it looks perfect to the naked eye...in pictures you can see a minor color difference but not in person. Might have to do with camera lens. The light output is more than stock but not near what a hid kit would be...however these run cool so no worries about melting chrome housing. my hids are 5000k color so it matches factory hids closely.

I bought them off ebay and will post link here... (mods if this breaks any rules remove the link as you see fit)

They do look good - bright even during the daylight. Thanks for the link!

glad to help! I will say that they are the H16 so you will have to trim one tab off of the bulb but it does not effect where the bulb seals or the factory harness at all. it literally takes one little slice with a sharp knife and its done!

Default Update on fogs

Thanks for the post 2012sxt! I was more confident with trying the H16 bulb after seeing your success. Here is what I went with:

H16 35w halogen bulb. I am partial to the yellow "euro" lookName: IMAG0080.jpg

Like 2012 sxt posted, you need to sheer off one of the tabs (very easy!) This is the single tab that needs to be removed (other side has two tabs, so its easy to distinguish between the proper one).

Here is a shot of the brightness from the fogs only!

Here is a crap picture meant only to show the brightness compared to the stock headlights (color contrast is WAY better in person and should look even better when the new headlight bulbs come in)

I can't speak to the heat difference and possibility of melting, but with it being halogen and only 10w higher, hopefully it won't be an issue. Bulbs are on amazon for about $25 and come in 4 different kelvin temps. Hope you all find this useful!
